I ordered this because we have an upcoming road trip and will be spending the majority of our 18 night traveling in Airbnb's. I've heard of people finding hidden cameras in rental homes and I wanted to make sure my family won't be spied on. This device is essentially a few very bright LEDs and a small lens you look through that creates a lens flare when the light bounces off a convex lens. I first tested this by looking around my office and didn't find any cameras until I shone the lights on my webcam, at which point I immediately detected a lens flare. It worked well finding the webcam because the webcam's lens is quite large. But I then pulled out a pinhole spy camera that I sometimes set up at home when traveling. That camera is tiny and has a piece of plastic covering the lens, meaning the actual lens is set back a little in the housing. I placed it on the table and went back to scanning the room. As I passed over the pinhole camera, I didn't see any flare. I picked up the pinhole camera and shone the light straight at the lens, at which point I finally saw a small flare. This test made me realize that the detector will not be effective at finding pinhole cameras unless I shine the red lights directly into a camera's lens, which is not very likely if I'm scanning an entire room or rental house. The device works, but it doesn't work particularly well. And given what it actually does, I don't think it's worth anywhere near the $127 it currently sells for. This device should really cost no more than $10-15 and I suspect it cost no more than $1-2 to manufacture. Given that it is only minimally effective and that it is massively overpriced, I would not recommend this product. Read more

this seems really overpriced for something you can build with simple parts. the question is trying to prove it's helpful, as i would have to have created a scenario where something was there that could be detected. i'm in a hotel checking various things that would create the same result this would give and couldn't get it to pick it up, so not sure how well this would help in a real scenario.
