When I compare the overall quality of this knife to its cost, I can honestly say that it, cautiously, deserves four stars. What I like most about this knife is the geometry of the blade. To me, it looks awesome, and that's why I bought it. I need another knife like America needs another politician, but sometimes need has little to do with the equation. Per the advertiser, this knife is made of 440C carbon steel. 440C is actually a high carbon stainless steel. 440C at one time was considered a high-end metal, but with all the new super steels on the market today, 440C has taken its place among the mid to lower range steels. This is not a bad thing, because when properly heat treated, 440C can be strong, hold an edge well, and rather easy to sharpen. The potential issue with this knife is that we don't know how well it was heat treated. My opinion is that because it was made in China and has a low cost, the heat treat was probably not the best. Only actual use over time will tell us for certain. What I do like about the blade, aside from its physical appearance, is that it came to me pretty sharp. It will shave the hair from my arm with only a slight amount of downward pressure. The cutting edge is symmetrical, and the other lines, angles and grinds are good. This knife has a full tang and feels very solid in the hand, but is not overly heavy or awkward. At the tang, the metal is about 4mm thick, which I feel is a near perfect size. The tip is quite pointed and will pierce easily. There is enough metal backing it up that as long as the heat treat was properly applied, it should be very durable. The blade is a recurve, meaning that it will give one additional cutting power. I like recurve blades, but they are a bit tricky to sharpen. I use the KaBar brand sharpener on all my knives, including a 12" Kukri, which itself is essentially a recurve and it does a fine job. I generally do not care for top guards because there is no practical use for them. This one, however, does not interfere with actual use. It places my thumb at about a 45 degree angle feels pretty good. The entire guard is definitely solid, and I feel adds a lot to the overall appearance of the knife. The pommel is equally massive, but not to a detrimental degree. I'm not sure what kind of wood is used in the handle, but mine has an attractive orange tint and a very nice grain. The wood to metal fit is perfect, and even the rivets are flush. This was nicely done. Overall, the knife is well balanced and fits my hand fairly well. The one thing I do not like about this knife are the edges comprising the guard and pommel. These edges are fairly sharp and should have been radiused. Rounding these edges would definitely have made the knife far more comfortable to use. These edges are not sharp enough to cause any harm, but they do detract from the overall comfort level. The other issue, although a minor one, involves the finish. Some parts of the knife were polished with more attention to detail than others. A couple more minutes on a buffing wheel would have really made the finish stand out. A leather sheath is included with this knife, but it does not fit the knife very well. It rattles around to an excessive degree. If it were not for the strap, it would not remain securely in place during heightened physical activity. The leather comprising the sheath is thin and will likely not hold up well to the rigors of heavy use for any appreciable amount of time. For light duty applications, however, it will suffice. If you know someone who is into leatherworking, I'd have them make one. Even though the knife's guard is a bit unconventional in appearance, you should also be able to buy a good quality sheath that will fit well. I rate the sheath one out of five stars. I love the physical appearance of this knife, and it appears to have a decent amount of quality. Looks, however, must always take a back seat to performance. For the money, this is quite possibly a decent knife. Without a proven track record of success in challenging environments, however, I certainly would not bet my life on it. There is no such thing as any one knife that will serve all purposes well, so this is why I always have a couple different high quality knives with me when I take to the bush. After 22 years of service in a branch of the military, I can tell you that the key to survival is always being prepared. In sum, I do love the appearance of this knife, and it may well prove to be a decent addition to one's field gear. IMO, value is the sum of an item's practicality, quality, and price. These days, one can barely have a crappy lunch for two at some fast food dive for the cost of this knife. All criteria considered, I feel this knife is worth a second look. Yesterday, I saw that there was a 50% discount coupon button on Amazon for this very knife, so I wasted no time in ordering it. This coupon reduces the cost of the knife to $20.
