There are two versions, a gold version and a black version. The difference isn't just the color. The black version at the time of this review is $10 more than the gold version and also comes with a charging base. The gold version must be plugged into a USB cable while the black version charges when you set it in its base. I much prefer to have the base. It looks a lot nicer and is much more convenient. I've never liked electric shavers. They always irritate my skin and don't cut nearly as close as my bladed shavers. It also takes much longer to shave with them. I recently purchased a shaver for my father that cost 2-3 times what this shaver costs and he let me try it out. I didn't like it. It didn't shave close and gave me razorburn. Trying out this shaver left me pleasantly surprised. It cuts much closer than my father's shaver, to the point where it actually looks like I just shaved. It does it faster too and gives me very little razor burn. So I could actually see switching to electric with this shaver. The only drawback is that it's not a wet/dry shaver so you can't get it wet. AWESOME foil shaver! First one to truly be able to tame my better half’s facial hair, so he can go clean shaven without the breakouts and irritation caused by razors. It tackled his very coarse facial hair that tends to grow against his skin, making it difficult for previous shavers to catch the hair, which makes for very fast and easy grooming. It gets his face as smooth as a razor, but this is a catch 22 because it means he has to be careful on his neck to avoid razor burn. The charging stand is a nice addition so it’s always charged for him to use in the morning before work. The battery seems to have a pretty good battery life, but it’s not required use long enough for the battery die to yet. Nice that it offers the option to charge directly with the type C cord if necessary so you can throw it on your car charger on the way yo work! I have also tested a variety of no-name foil shavers over time. Most of them are OK--as good as something like the Remington foil shaver I used as a kid--but can't compete with the better name brand shavers. This one is no exception. It looks really pretty and comes nicely packaged. But performance is pretty lackluster, and it seems to be made of almost all plastic (and so feels quite light). I tested it on a 2 day weekend growth of beard. I was able to get the beard cut, but it took several passes, and had particular issues with a few stray longer hairs on my face. Ultimately, I wound up doing a finishing shave with one of my high end name brand shavers, which had no problem with the stuff this shaver left behind. Specifics of the foil shaver kit: ** Rechargable cordless shaver with plastic head protector ** Weighted charging cradle ** Cleaning brush ** USB charging cable (USB-C connection) The foil shaver is trivial to use: There is a slider on the side that turns it on or off. The head of the shaver pulls off for easy cleaning. The shaver is comfortable in the hand--although it's far lighter than I'd expect or like. As noted, it works, but it is not as good as a high-end foil shaver (e.g. Braun 7+ series or high-end Panasonic). The charging cradle works well, and bonus points for providing a weighted cradle which is less likely to get knocked over. At the end of the day, I'd say that his shaver just isn't all that great. If it were inexpensive, I'd consider it to provide value as an entry-level item. But it's priced about the same as some mid-line name brand shavers from brands like Braun when on sale. And at that price, it's simply not a good option. The charging cradle is really the star here, since it's weighted--unlike a lot of charging cradles that are too light and easily tip over. Still, a good charging cradle isn't enough to make this a must purchase. First impression: the shaver is the right size and well-weighted. It fits nicely into my hand and is easy to use. The positives: comfortable to hold, shaves about as well as most generic electric shavers, USB-C charging is convenient and the matte black model comes with a charging base too (for $10 more than the gold model). The negatives: no locking power button (for me a must when traveling), no LED display (so no way to tell the remaining battery capacity), no pop-up trimmer, not usable wet, and for a generic product the price is quite high. Kudos to the manufacturer for adding replacement blades to their Amazon listing. With most generic shavers it's near impossible to find replacement blades. But at the cost of these shavers, I think they should include one replacement blade with the initial purchase. It's not a bad shave at all but the lack of a locking power button, plus no LED display and no trimmer, for $70 - $80 doesn't make a lot of sense to me. This is exactly what my husband was looking for. He gets his beard trimmed professionally every so often, but he tries to maintain it as much as he can in between visits, and we've found that one regular razor just isn't enough apparently. He's noted that professional places use a shaver like this to clean up the growth around his neck, and his razor isn't able to do the same work as the shaver does. This shaver works perfectly and gets a good, close shave leaving clean smooth skin behind.
