Much better replacement for my Phillips

Went to head and spent a touch extra to get the titanium coated blades on the R5. Still the cost was less than half of what my Philips shavers originally cost. So far so good and I'll update if it changes, but this gives a good shave and is a good quality. it has the heads that contour to your face as you shave. As others have mentioned the first shave with the new razor can cause one hell of a razor burn rash. Don't know why it was any different than using my old shaver but it was. Third shave now and I'm not having that problem anymore so like I said so far so good. The updated trimmer is definitely much better than the original design but nowhere near as good as my old shaver trimmer was. It does cut longer hairs much better than my old shaver and at least it is the dual cutting system unlike what the other companies are producing these days. This shaver is not heavy at all. All the better for packing for the plane trips. Read more

A backup razor?

This was a backup for the Remington 845 I inherited from my Dad. The 845's batteries were failing so before I opened it up, I bought the R5 in case the worst happened. 4 stars may be a stretch. What I like? It is sleek, light weight, quiet, seems to have good battery life and lots of power. I don't travel so that battery life thing may not be tested well. What I don't like, the instructions say to hook the razor to the cord, the cord to the USB supply and THEN plug it in to the wall. That is just counter-intuitive and a dumb way to design a product. It is just so much easier to disconnect the cord from the razor. A USB block, really? And they don't supply that? That's strike 2. Finally, it just doesn't shave very close. They provide a standoff attachment for that stubble look but if I want that look, I don't need the attachment. I have read that others have gotten razor burn. I certainly don't know how that happens unless there is terrible inconsistency in product mfg. In the end, it does work and I can overlook the cable inconsistencies. 5 o'clock shadow becomes 2 o'clock shadow but its ok in a pinch. But as long as my R845 runs, that will be my razor of choice. Decent but not great

I bought this because I liked the color and the design, plus the reviews looked good. Also I have the prior model and it works pretty good. I don't grow much of a beard (pretty thin and my hair is also thin) and this shaver seems to really struggle cutting through it. The blades aren't the sharpest as it seems to pull the hair on the first pass and only cuts it on the second pass. I don't think I'd buy it again. Read more

Remington R5. Really good shaver!

I've been using my old Remington R6 electric shaver for at least 8 years and thought it was time to get a new shaver. The R6 shaves well, still gets full charge and I've never replaced the shave blade head. Searching online, a new R6 is expensive to me, well over $100+, so I got the Remington R5 shaver which shaves good, a little more lightweight. I'm having issues trying to place the plastic protective cap over the shaving heads. Other than that, really nice shaver. Read more

Better than Philips Norelco but still needs improvment

After having 2 Philips Norelco rotary shavers for the last 18 years and being disappointed with the replacement blade quality going down over time, I thought it was time to give another brand a try. I was moving from a Philips/Norelco 4100 AT810 to this Remington R5000. What drew me to Remington is they have been making shavers for a while. The specs were good and it seemed like it was worth moving from Philips/Norelco. The shaver features 2 rotary cutting blades which is twice the cutting area as a Norelco. Titanium coated blades seemed like a great idea as blade degradation seems to be a problem. *How does it work and perform? My first use I was way too aggressive with my shave. My old Norelco that I was used to cut like crap and moving to this I didn't compensate for a new shaver and blades. It definitely did a way better job than Philips/Norelco by far. Because I was way too aggressive with my first shave I got razor burn bad, mostly on my neck. I can't really blame Remington because it did perform well, almost too good and I wasn't used to the close shave and new blades that actually cut and shaved. My advice is to go slow and do not apply a lot of pressure until your face gets used to the new razor. After the razor burn healed and my face and I got used to a new razor, it worked well, better than Philips/Norelco with new blades. The Remington R5000 has a nice flexible head and is easy to clean. The Philips/Norelco that I have does not have a flexible head. After getting used to the Remington for 2 weeks, The shave is better and closer but it seems to take the same amount of time as the Philips/Norelco does. *The Positives: -Closer shave than Philips/Norelco -Flexible head -Warranty is good 3 years -Comfortable shave after you get used to it. -blades are easy to change (the entire head with blades gets replaced) *The Negatives: -Battery life not as good as Philips/Norelco (got 4.5 shaves out of it before it died, shaver was fully charged) Philips/Norelco has them beat. -Blade sharpness seems to fall off quickly, effectiveness of the blades seems to go down faster than I thought they would, but not any worse than Philips/Norelco -Motor does not turn as fast as Philips/Norelco. Turns slower. If they sped up the motor speed it would do a better job. -Blade replacement is easy but expensive the entire head with the blades as it is designed to be replaced is $42.00 as of this writing. That's higher than Philips/ Norelco but their blades suck now. -Shaver does not have much it comes with No protective cap, It has a stubble attachment I guess you can use as a protective cap but it does not protect it like a solid cap. No travel case, No cleaning brush, nothing but the charging cord, shaver, stubble attachment and the owners manual. -Does not do a better job than Philips/Norelco on hard to shave places like on your neck and under your chin. -Pop up trimmer is flimsy and not as good as Philips/Norelco. *How can they improve this -Faster motor -Better battery life -include protective cap -improve blade life *Would I buy again, Yes over a Philips/Norelco shaver but there is probably something better out there. Panasonic Arc 5 and Braun Series 9. Update I ended up purchasing a Panasonic ES-LV65-S and absolutely love it. What an incredible shave. Read more
