Ridge Big Bro vs Penny Nickel

I had previously been a Penny Nickel board owner and loved my board. After losing it I was looking for a more affordable option to get around on. I heard good things about the Ridge Big Brother, but was myself looking for a comparison between the Ridge and the Penny Nickel. Both of which are very similar on paper. In person the Ridge appears high quality upon first glance. A closer inspection yields a little bit cheaper looking finish on the plastic deck and craftsmanship second to the Penny board. However, the plastic deck of the Ridge skateboard actually strikes me as thicker (and perhaps this means more durable) than the Penny, which seems to provide a stiffer flex when standing or riding. That is to say the board feels stiffer/less flexible. The plastic deck provides a fair amount of traction (to the point where I can even olley with it), although I would consider the addition of grip tape. When I first pulled the board out of the box and gave the wheels a spin, they rotated only for a very short time before stopping, which in my experience has been indicative of cheaper models. On my first ride the bearings also felt a little groggy. The board rolled decently, but not comparable to my old Penny board. HOWEVER, I typically like a little wiggle in my wheels so I loosened the nuts and freed up the wheel a little, which seemed to make a huge difference, and I went out for another ride and noticed an exceptional improvement and an outstanding ride for $24.99 (which is what I paid). I notice some differences compared to the Nickel board in the feel of the road and some maneuverability (could have to do with how loose the trucks are) but overall the ride is amazing for the price point and really feels like you're riding a quality board. So far very pleased with the bargain. Would definitely recommend considering this board over Penny unless price isn't an issue. I don't think you are missing out on much going with the Ridge over the Penny, the Penny sort of sands everything down to a very fine grain, while the Ridge gets the job done very well with a little courser finish but a hugely reduced price. A truly amazing value for the quality of cruiser

I purchased the 22' Ridge board almost two years ago and it is still going strong (its a perfect portable cruiser for city and school transportation). However, its smaller size diminishes stability at higher speeds and rougher terrain, so I decided to purchase the larger 27' model and have noticed a far more stable riding experience against those elements. The board is far thicker and heavier than its smaller brother, and equipped with wider trucks. Given the abuse I've wrought on the 22' with little blemish, I expect the 27' to last a good while; the plastic is quite strong. My only complaint is that the bearings aren't all that great. Even upon loosening the nut, the wheels don't spin for long and there's some frictions in the ride. This was the same case with my 22'; fortunately, buying new bearings from a reputable brand (I recommend BONES REDS) fixes this problem, and provides a much faster and smoother ride. Read more

Awesome so far

The media could not be loaded. Just got them in today, and they are so nice. The look is very sexy. Surpringly unlike most things where you can order a plethora of colors, all the boards I ordered from them came exactly right. When they arrive their turning abilities are very stiff, but if you take a wrench and lossen the trunks their turning becomes super sharp and quick, its amazing (video below). Also lossen the wheels a bit so the ride is smoother. Seem very sturdy and weather resistant, only reason I gave a 4 is because I am stingy and something has to be otherworldly to get a 5. Read more

Good basic skateboard

Bought this for my 8 year old son and he loves it. It rides smooth and turns easily. The wheels didn't spin as freely as I would have liked but I loosened the wheel bolts and now they spin great. I weigh 200+ lbs and it is more than sturdy enough to support my weight. I am satisfied with my purchase. Read more

Love It!

This board is one of the best things I've brought with me to college! It's ultra smooth and only a fraction of the price of other name brand boards. It has a really solid build and I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is interested in boarding. Love it! Read more

OKAY'ish

I ordered this product not expecting much. Too be fair its a decent board for $40, I mainly made the purchase because I'm a college student looking to carry something small and light to class instead of the 42" longboard from Volador that I own. Needless to say the bearings on the board are very inadequate, it barely rolls and comes to a stop rather quickly; If you are going over bumps, forget about it you'll be constantly pushing and don't get to enjoy the cruise that a board is supposed to bring. Besides the bearings, and the constant pushing you have to do because of them, if you are really keen on not spending a lot of money on a board this is for you! But if you're willing to save up just a little bit more to hit that $120 range, I am almost sure you'll get a board that is worth keeping LONG term. I may be a little bias because I am used to my longboard but its literally only $70 (the Volador one I mentioned) and its so much more enjoyable simply from the fact that you can cruise without pushing so damn much and can get over very large bumps with sufficient speed, the only con being is that its 42". So I mean do a little research but I rode this board and its OK, not horrible but not good, ya know! Hopefully this helps with your purchase, I personally wouldn't recommend. Read more
