I can sum up this review by saying I was already was lucky enough to get one of these, and now I own two! We make a lot of smoothies in our house, as well as ice cream, so having two of these for a family as large as mine was a win! I love its simplicity and it doesn’t require electricity. We simply put our smoothie mixture on the surface which needs to be frozen at least ten hours before use, and viola…we have an ice cream smoothie! Within minutes you can shave your smoothie ice cream up with the included scoops and eat it! It’s great for kids since they can be really creative in what Ingredients they use, and since once it’s frozen the allotted time, the “magic” of creating a delicious frozen ice cream happens within minutes. Great for kids who are short on patience. It does however, require you to eat it pretty quickly since it melts within 10-15 minutes. I wish it stayed frozen longer, but its use as a quick ice cream maker that doesn’t have to be churned for hours, is a win for me. You do need to remember that the tray needs to be frozen before use, but with any ice cream maker, you have to freeze the bowl or tray before use. So I just make sure after cleaning it, which is easy, it goes straight into my freezer. The directions aren’t the best, so I researched similar products and was able to figure out how to it pretty quickly. Plus, since it didn’t include recipes I just researched for those as well. It would be nice to have an instructional booklet with clear directions, and recipes included. However, you can find the info on the internet if that’s not possible for the manufacturer to include. The 9x7” size only holds up to 5oz without spillage, and I found if I’m using a thinner milk like 2% rather than a full fat cream base, it’ll only hold about 4oz, maybe a bit less depending on your ingredients. These are great single serve amounts, but if you’re looking to have multiple servings from this, you’ll need more of these kits. It’s why I now have two. The included scrapers work ok. I’d like if they were more sturdy. Your first attempts at trying to make pretty curls may fall short, but with practice you’ll get better. It took me maybe 10-12 attempts before I had something that looked pretty enough to serve to guests. Which still wasn’t chef quality, but passable. Just be patient and practice, and it’ll happen if that’s important to you. Or, if you're like my family members and just like tasty ice cream, and looks don’t matter much, practicing for perfection won’t matter. Bottom line, it’s all delicious! All in all I’m very happy with the kit, and with just a few tweaks, the manufacturer would have received five stars from me. Read more

Got this on a whim to try with friends. Value for the price is great! It was a ton of fun to do as a group. The instructions are pretty straightforward and easy to understand. It freezes as described and is easy to clean. The whole process is pretty quick to use it, and the longest part of the process is the pre-freezing of the tray. I love that this can be used to make oat/soy/dairy alternative icecream and that a variety of flavor combos can be made based on what you have on hand. I’m extremely happy with it and it has become a staple of get togethers. Read more

This rolled ice cream maker kit is a fun little gadget, but it definitely has its limits. I found that the plate doesn't stay cold for very long, which makes it really hard to actually get those perfect rolled ice cream curls you see in shops. However, it is still a blast to use for mashing up fruit and milk together to make a quick "instant" ice cream. It definitely solidifies whatever you put on it, but not right away, so the freezing power is there initially, even if the rolling part is a struggle. It’s a neat DIY activity for a quick treat, just don't expect professional-looking rolls. Read more

This Ikokei Rolled Ice Cream Maker Kit (pink) requires a learning curve. The included instructions aren't great -- they are in broken English and no recipes are included. But this seems virtually identical to many other off-brand freeze plates, so recipes and instructional videos are easy to find. It takes 8-12 hours to freeze in the freezer. In the winter, I discovered it actually froze faster outside. However, realize that 9x7 is a pretty small surface area, resulting in small portion sizes. I saw online recipes calling for 6 ounces for a plate this size, but I thought that one cup (4 ounces) was pretty full before it started spilling while turning the cream. It's a pretty basic build quality. Some freeze plates that I've seen have storage options on the bottom for the scrapers, but this one doesn't, so they take up space in the silverware drawer. The scrapers are very basic thin plastic, but they're functional. They're a bit wide, I wish it came with some narrower ones. Also, there are big gaps around the perimeter on the bottom. If there is a functional reason for these gaps I'm not seeing it, but they definitely serve as a dirt trap and are difficult to clean out. Once fully frozen, you have about 5-10 minutes before it warms up. I was hoping if I worked quickly I could make two servings with it, but I could only make one serving at a time before it warmed up and needed to be refroze. I should also note that I was using it in a pretty cool environment, about 55 degrees, and it might warm up even faster in a traditional kitchen. Also realize that homemade ice cream or ice shavings does not have stabilizers that commercial ice cream has, so it will melt faster. There is a learning curve, and I'm a novice at this. But I tried a recipe with a half-and-half base, and I think heavy cream would be better/thicker. I also tried a recipe with a yogurt base, and I found it to be a bit icy. Both were still delicious, though, but getting the consistency right and getting them to roll up neatly takes practice. I think it's fun. I wish I had gotten a larger one. The results are delicious, though getting it to look nice requires some practice. I think an average overall value. Read more
