The little toddler seat is built in, attached, but when you flip it up for adults it's completely out of the way and stays back (it doesn't fall forward to hit you on the back or the backside). The little one can use his step stool to reach the toilet and simply raise the lid to find his little seat ready for him, or he can flip it down if it's already up.
