About this item

  • CARBON PRODUCTION: All plants require a source of carbon, and Flourish Excel is a great and convenient source of bioavailable organic carbon.
  • IRON PRODUCTION: Flourish Excel also possesses iron reducing properties, thus promoting the ferrous state of iron (Fe+2), which is more easily utilized by plants than ferric iron (Fe+3).
  • PHOTOSYNTHESIS: Plants must produce longer chain carbon compounds (photosynthetic intermediates). By dosing with Flourish Excel you bypass the involvement of chain carbon compounds, and introduce the already finished, structurally similar compounds.
  • TREATMENT: On initial use or after a major (> 40%) water change, use 1 capful of Flourish Excel (5 mL) for every 40 L (10 US gallons). Thereafter, use 1 capful for every 200 L (50 US gallons) daily or every other day. For smaller dosing please note that each cap thread is approximately 1 mL.
  • SAFETY: Flourish Excel is completely safe for fish, however if you have Anacharis in an aquarium in which you are dosing Flourish Excel, then it is recommended to use it every other day rather than daily.

A Staple for Healthy, Growing Aquarium Plants

KaninAngMandaragatMarch 1, 2026✓ Verified purchase

I keep coming back to Seachem Flourish Excel because it consistently helps my aquarium plants stay healthy and grow well. After regular dosing, I’ve noticed stronger growth and better overall plant appearance. It’s easy to dose, and the bottle lasts a good amount of time depending on tank size. I’ve had good results using it as part of a regular maintenance routine, especially in planted tanks where I want steady growth without setting up a full CO2 system. The plants respond well, and I’ve seen improved color and vitality over time. As long as you follow the recommended dosing instructions, it integrates easily into a standard care schedule. If you maintain a planted aquarium and want reliable support for plant health, this has been a dependable product in my experience. Read more

Excellent product for algae control and for plant growth

Donald T.March 14, 2024✓ Verified purchase

I purchased this product after some plants I had bought introduced black beard algae to my aquarium. I tried a couple of other products prior to this with no luck. I tried spot treating with Hydrogen Peroxide and while that did seem to work, it was too difficult to use. I had the algae all over the tank to the point that the Hydrogen Peroxide just wasn't a practical solution. I've been using the Flourish Excel for about five weeks now. After maybe ten days to two weeks, it had basically eradicated my algae problem. I still have a couple of spots of green or brown algae here or there - but it's exactly that, just spots. I suspect the Flourish Excel works better or worse on different kinds of algae (as it completely destroyed my problem Black Beard algae) but even on the algae that it doesn't completely take care of, it certainly reduces it and holds it at bay. Additionally, the plants seem to love it. It took a couple of weeks before I noticed substantial enough plant growth that I was sure it was because of the products and not simply regular expected growth from the plants naturally. I have been using this product in conjunction with a shrimp safe liquid fertilizer and my plants have benefitted greatly. My Amazon Swords in particular have tripled in size since starting this product with the liquid fertilizer. Very pleased. Great product, with no side effects to the fish, snails, or shrimp and crawfish in the tank. Read more

Fight Algae

citan-uzukiMarch 1, 2015✓ Verified purchase

Flourish Excel is a liquid source of CO2 for your aquarium plants. Regular addition of Excel will help your plants thrive inside your tank. This is a good option for those who do not wish to add a mechanical CO2 injection system to their tank. An added benefit of using Excel is that it discourages the growth of algae. I have had very good results with my aquatic plants since I started using Excel. Even plants that are hard to grow, like Dwarf Hairgrass, thrive when using a combination of very high light levels and Flourish Excel. I have not noticed any adverse effects on the fish. Will Excel completely prevent the growth of algae? No, it will not. It discourages algae growth, but will not prevent it completely. With a good tank maintenance routine, spare use of fertilizers, ideal light levels, and Seachem Excel, you should be able to manage algae. You will still get algae, but not to the point where it takes over your tank. Seachem Flourish Excel is one of the best products you can get for a planted fish tank. Even if you already have a CO2 injection system, you can still use Excel. You will naturally have to play around with dosing. Having said all of that, regular dosing of Excel can get expensive if you have a very large tank with a lot of fast-growing plants. Then again, an automated CO2 injection system will also set you back a lot of money. You can try and find cheaper sources of liquid CO2, like some aquarists have done and are using surgical instrument sterilizers. However, you need to know what you are doing and will naturally have to play around with dosages and concentration. If you have a small tank, say less than 75 gallon, your best choice would simply be to use Excel. This is an excellent, excellent product. Algae is one of the banes of aquarium keeping. To find a product that not only encourages plant growth, but also discourages algae, is a double blessing. This is one of the most useful advances in aquarium-keeping in recent times. Highly recommended. Read more

Clear water, seems to be working on the BBA

RobertJuly 15, 2025✓ Verified purchase

I have a 75 gallon tank with an infestation of Black Beard Algae (BBA). The instructions state to dose 5ml (one capful) per 10 gallons on the first dosage. Take into account the volume of water displaced by your substrate, driftwood, and other ornamental additions. My 75 gallon tank does not hold 75 gallons of water. Having read many of the other reviews, I chose to under dose and added only five capfuls. The initial dose caused the water to cloud up. The instructions stated to dose one capful per day, or every other day, after the initial dose. I waited two days for the water to clear, and then added one capful. On day three, the BBA has gone from a black color to a grey/white color. I’m going add one capful every other day from here on out. I’ll be testing my water regularly, and make bi-weekly water changes. My fish and Nerite snails are all doing well. Based upon the initial results, I would recommend this product. Just be sure not to overdose. Update July 22, 2025: Added photos to show the progress of the BBA removal. You can aid in the removal of BBA by washing your plants in a bleach wash. I removed all of my driftwood, baked it in the AZ sun for a day, and then used steel wool to lightly scrub off the dead BBA. I believe Flourish Excell is aiding in keeping the BBA at bay. My plants appear healthier and greener using Flourish Excell. Read more

Good for Black Beard Algae and overall plant health

paul v.March 7, 2026✓ Verified purchase

Bought this stuff to help contain the black beard algae I had in my freshwater tank. It seems to work as I’ve noticed that the general algae on the glass is definitely decreased, the BBA has thinned and weakened and my live plants are growing stronger. Seems like a win win situation. Read more
