About this item

  • PUT THEM IN A SONG RIGHT AWAY: anyone can play these claves, regardless of skill; their bright wood tone cuts through music nicely when struck together without blaring "clack" sounds
  • WHY IT MATTERS: their naturally musical tone can instantly change the feel of your music, even if you're not sure how to play them; add to songs live or in the studio
  • CATCH UP QUICK: one big reason our Classic Claves are so popular is they have identical shape and weight, so there's practically no learning curve; just hold them with a loose grip to let the wood resonate as you strike them together
  • DRIVING THE SOUND: made of solid, select hardwood with consistent grain and color to get a deeply resonant effect; our durable finish seals the wood while letting it respond fully
  • OF NOTE: Meinl Classic Claves are multi-use; they can be played in traditional Cuban and Afro-Latin music, contemporary styles, drum circles, and they're perfect in classrooms to teach students about rhythm

Good budget claves

Benjamin C.December 1, 2025✓ Verified purchase

I needed a set of claves to play in a medium-size room and didn't want to spend a lot of money. I opted to get these and glad that I did. They aren't pro claves, but overall, they sound good and project fairly well. You can hear them over a conga player. I haven't tested them in larger rooms, so I am not sure how well they will project there. But, if you are looking for a budget priced set of claves for small to medium sized rooms, these are highly recommended. Read more

Priced right, sounds great, cuts through the music, and product is sturdy.

These have a wonderful pitch and need to be held correctly to get the full sound out of them. I mean it’s solid, yet light, higher pitched, priced right. You get a great product for the money. No need to spend anymore on a clave unless you have the money to spend and/or you are professional. Even at that point it still does a great job. Read more

Decent sound and priced right

I’m a classical guitarist, not a percussionist, but often use small percussion instruments in my ensemble for Latin numbers. Lost my ancient rosewood claves (or they walked off) and replaced them with these Meinl redwood claves. Apparently I misread the description—though I was buying another rosewood set—but ended up with redwood. They’re about half the weight of my old rosewood set but softer and less bright when played. My rosewood claves had a rounded bell-like timbre and didn’t have to struck are hard as the Meinl. With that said, these claves are okay: do the job, are priced right, well made and smoothly finished, but I’ll keep my eye out for a quality rosewood set. Read more

Great Sound!

I bought a pair of these claves for my music classroom because the ones I had kept getting taken from me. These were relatively cheap and I didn't expect much from them. They proved me wrong though! I am able to get a loud, clear, and strong sound from them. They are a little on the smaller side, which made me think they were going to be quiet but my orchestra has no problem hearing them over their playing. If they ever fall apart, I'll definitely be buying another pair. Read more

Redwood-colored, and lacks the tone

frankp93December 21, 2015✓ Verified purchase

'So who's going to know', I can hear the marketing guy say. Well, anyone who cares about the sound of acoustic instruments - especially those old enough to remember the tonal qualities of real redwood: the roundness and warmth beneath the crisp, consistent pop - not to mention the flat, 'powdery' grain and comfortable texture in the hands. I need these so I'm not about to saw them up to tell for sure - the grain and weight indicate they might be stained white oak. Bright sounding to be sure, but lacking the consistent warmth and comfortable feel. I guess the days of grabbing discarded redwood fence slats to build homemade instruments are long gone. I was hoping these might kindle those memories, but it wasn't to be. I regret not getting the natural wood-colored model. I'm sure they have the same tone as these but I wouldn't feel deceived and have to beg off when a percussion friend my age asks 'Hey, are those redwood?'. Read more
