The straps help hold the ice pack in place and it covers all the needed areas sufficiently. The size of the ice pack also makes it useful for other areas like the back. It is a little difficult to put on with an injured shoulder. I also found that it was heavier than I expected it to be, which could be a concern for an extra sore shoulder. To avoid the strain of a heavier pack, I found that a Ziplock bag with ice and paper towel was lighter, but not as effective in providing complete coverage. Actually purchased this for an ankle injury, knowing that I’ll be able to use this for a lot of different areas on the body. I also love the straps! It’s extremely versatile and comfortable.
