One great product. It works right out of the box, the first time. Set up is a snap and takes only about 10 minutes. I have a Dish satellite system and had been warned that Sony had put a chip in this recorder that would disallow any recordings from the DVR. I have found this allegation totally false as I have had no trouble whatsoever recording directly from the Dish or the DVR. VCR dubbing is also a snap as long as you set recording speed first. I have put 8 hours of old VHS tapes on one DVD. And if you purchase the HDMI to DVI input cable, everything is played at 1080i which has a much clearer picture on High Def TV set. The bottom line is that as this unit gets older, playback of commercial DVDs gets worse. I'm not talking about some videophile crap, I'm talking about being able to watch a movie, period. I have commercial DVDs that simply don't play on this unit, or sometimes freeze in the middle of playing. These are not DVD's purchased from some flea market, these are Disney/Pixar and other big studio films purchased at regular retail stores. When the unit was new, the problems only occurred with a few DVDs; now it happens with virtually every DVD. Sony should stand behind these units and recall them. I've had this device for over year, The unit has an intuitive on screen set up and a fool proof quick copy from VHS to DVD feature. I did have some issues with some picture blurring/noise on my flat screen display while pausing my hd directv satellite HR20 box in the tv guide menu function. Amazon was quick to replace the Sony VX-555 twice for me, but this abnormality still occurs (in a very minor way). Also, the audio has an echoing effect when playing the tv through the Combo player, I may need to tinker with the audio settings in the program menu, but since I rarely use the turner on the Combo player it is a non issue. Overall, this is a piece of electronic that is welcomed in my rack and will be long lived. I'm sure, in time, Sony will have a BluRay device like this, but since i have a PS3 (I got a great deal on it from Amazon) I'm happy. I believe this Combo Player has upscaling too, but you may want to double check the product specification in the description section. Read more

All my mom wanted was to get her old VHS tapes over to DVD to share the memories with all the family. After two unsuccessful attempts with two other players that didn't work purchased through Ebay. We have put our Sony RDR-VX555 Tunerless DVD Recorder/VHS Combo Player through its paces to make sure everything works... and it does! Finally a sleek, quiet and affordable unit will allow us to rid our home of boxes and boxes of VHS tapes. Now we can consolidate decades of clips and recorded programs into a DVD collection that will fit in a single 3-ring binder! We use the DVD-R for stuff we want to keep, and DVD+RW for recording programs to watch and then toss afterwards. No problems to report after this brief, initial period of use.
