Good buy in small package

Nice speaker, connects easily and sounds really good. It is very small as one would expect of a) a portable, water-resistant Bluetooth speaker b) any speaker at this price point; but it is more than adequate to listen to while cooking, take to the beach etc and the sound is quite good. It is a Sony which has a lot to do with why it was one of the number I considered before purchasing. I have several Sony electronics and they have proven to be reliable and of good quality. All things being equal(ish) I went with the brand I know. It has decent reviews and was very reasonably priced. It has proven to be a good little speaker. The sound is very good and no distortion even taken as loud as it will go. I may be 63, but the tunes I have and play are Five Finger Death Punch, Halestorm, Royal Blood, Breaking Benjamin and so forth, so it gets a workout - no Bach or easy-listening milquetoast music. I am pleased so far. My only con, and it isn’t really a dealbreaker for me, though it is VERY disappointing, is the volume level. It tops out before I wish it would. It can be played loud, but not as loud as I want/wish. I suppose it has to do with size and governing volume so as not to blow the speaker, but I have a sneaking suspicion it is like the volume control on my 2015 RAV4. It maxes out in my car, at the level Big Brother deems is the top level that is for our own good. You know, to save us from ourselves, keep us from blowing an eardrum (as if). Like headphones and earbuds do. We are too stupid to be left to run wild with that volume control!! Besides the infuriating limit to volume level, overall I am really liking it. I haven’t had it a long time, so if anything changes I will update. So far, it is a good buy. Read more

Great size, great sound, great speaker !

This great little speaker puts out some nice sound! I purchased it specifically for it's low end response (bass) which sound really great. The overall frequency response is pretty smooth - good highs, mids and lows. The operating features are simple and easy to use. It's worth reading the instructions to be sure you connect to device properly. I purchased 2 of these speakers so that I can run them in stereo. Following the easy instructions got me connected simply and easily in just a minute or two. These aren't super loud as compared to a large boombox - but they're not supposed to be - - they are only about 1/2 the size of a soda can. So for their size, they put out incredibly good, and punchy sound. And running the pair in stereo means you can spread them apart and get even more sound coverage (with incredible stereo effect). I use one of these, when I'm delivering mail in my LLV - - which is a fairly loud truck. I had a different branded Bluetooth speaker before, but the sound quality was too tinny - so that is why I purchased this Sony product. So if this sounds good in a Mail truck - you know it will sound great anywhere !! I haven't used mine a lot yet - so I can't boast about the battery life - but I think unless you are running it at top volume with heavy bass, you should get at least the manufacturers specified time (16 hrs) - - if not more. The unit has a nice solid feel to it - - very durable - - which is what you want for a portable device. The buttons are covered under the units "skin" so that keeps moister and dust from in inhibiting the controls. The audio port and USB port are also protected by a removable cover. The hole unit just feels well made. Overall - the size, sound quality, construction, and price make this a must have for anyone who likes their music on the go. Read more

The best option for travel

I purchased this speaker a year ago to carry while I travel for work. I've been using it every single day for a year and have covered half the US with this thing, in airlines, cars, and private planes. It's been packed and unpacked dozens of times and has fallen on the bathroom floor just as many times. I connect it to my laptop's bluetooth for music and movies and games. I have also compared it to probably 15 other similarly small speakers over that year, curious to see how much quality is actually out there. Note that when I purchased this speaker is was half the price, under $30. Just today I received three Harman Kardon speakers - a Traveller, and a small and large Esquire 2 - and I'm already packing them up to return. The Sony is better. All three HKs have the typical flat packaging, but the Sony is obviously shaped like a cylinder with a passive radiator on the bottom, and presumably a lot of space inside for reverberation. The Sony packs better bass than all but the large HK Esquire 2, while also having less abrasive treble because the speaker is pointing up instead of directly at me. Perhaps some people think this would cause a muddy sound, but small speakers tend to exacerbate high frequency distortion and clipping, so not having the speaker pointing right at me actually results in a much more pleasant sound. Plus, the Sony is much better for travel than the HKs as it is wrapped in rubber. The HKs are certainly more luxurious, with leather and chrome and whatnot, but the whole idea of a bluetooth speaker is portability and durability. My Sony has no marks from being dropped because the whole thing is rubber! I've also tried other speakers by Klipsch, Wonderboom, Anker, and several cheap Chinese brands. The Sony sounds better and is a more portable design than the Klipsch (which has a larger speaker, two passive radiators, and is twice as heavy) and the Wonderboom (which is larger and heavier) and is cheaper than both. The cheapo products were just that and were returned immediately. I would gladly buy another of these Sony speakers at full price and in a color other than black, but the one I already have has been excellent, outshined its price point, and just won't quit working. It might not be waterproof like the Wonderboom but I like to listen to music when *I'm* in the shower, not when the speaker is in the shower. I have not tried Bose travel speakers yet, although I do own a Revolve+ back home (and an A20 aviation headset which packs more sound quality than any studio headset I've ever worn). It's excellent, but it should be because its five times the size of this Sony and I would never consider travelling with it. Based on my experiences so far, I highly doubt the Sony-sized Bose speakers will be able to justify their price. Harman Kardon did a wonderful thing with the Aura 2 tabletop speaker but Sony has definitely outshined them when it comes to travel and durability. This little thing might be the best travel/laptop bluetooth speaker on the market. Read more
