UPDATE: I'm now convinced it was the USB DAC itself causing the issues I describe. I have switched from an admittedly ancient ODAC to a Topping D10s, and no longer experience the problem I described. Changing rating to 5, leaving the original post verbatim below. ---------------------------------------------- StarTech makes reliable stuff in my experience. This hub has limitations but it is likely the fault of either the USB 2.0 protocol or Windows. I'm not sure which, but it wasn't worth investigating in either case. I originally plugged a USB DAC into the back of the 7 port model. The hub seemed to stop working altogether sometimes when a new audio device was plugged in (such as the microphone in my webcam, or the speaker/microphone combo on a DualSense controller.). Like I said, I don't know for sure, all I know is it blows up in my ultra niche experimental usage. I figured these would all be low bandwidth enough to not cause an issue, but obviously something is getting mucked up somewhere. It's been rock solid since opting to plug my DAC directly into my motherboard as it was before. It has a Bluetooth Dongle connected all the time and various game controllers connected both wired and through bluetooth. I've also used it for data transfers off of my phone and to my kindle, as well as to charge my kindle and wireless controllers. The hub charges the kindle just as fast as the wall charger does. My webcam is connected through it as well but gets unplugged when not in use. Read more
I'll give the product the benefit of the doubt here on the overall rating: at least it works well on another system. If you don't need to worry about USB hub depth, it seems okay (but I have not tested it deeply). A minor disappointment to me is that a 7-port USB 2 hub does not come with a 4A power converter (500mA per port plus headroom of 500mA, so it lasts longer as the power converter ages). This one only came with a 2A power converter, so you can probably only plug in two (or three if you're lucky) devices that pull maximum current from the hub. This is NOT a flat 7-port hub. It is a cascaded pair of 4-port hubs. The upstream hub offers 3 usable connections and its fourth is connected to the downstream hub; the downstream hub offers all four of its downstream ports as usable connections. So instead of a single hub, it has two, one cascaded downstream of the other. Due to decisions on how the Thunderbolt 4 based dock on my laptop arranges USB hubs (stacking three gratuitous layers internally rather than fanning out from the root), the fact that this is a cascaded hub renders it useless for my intended use -- it only has three functioning ports on the upper hub; because the cascaded hub is already at 7 layers, which makes anything plugged into it beyond USB limits (for good reasons). For where I intended to use it, nothing on the last four ports shows up. I'll keep it for use on other systems instead of why I originally bought it. I'm also trying a couple of others; I'll probably mention them here if they are flat and don't use smaller cascaded hubs to gain a few more ports cheaply. 1st time trying this brand, I was pleasantly surprised at the build quality and performance, especially with data throughout speeds for portable drives. My primary purpose for this hub was actually for a radio mouse and reducing interference, the data handling was just a pleasant bonus. Read more
Thanks to this unit having MTTs and being strictly USB 2.0 (NOT 3.x+), so far so good with MIDI clock stability at 24 PPQN after several hours with manually-adjusted and significant BPM changes every hour or so. A Disaster Area micro.clock Gen4 provides clock source over USB, routing clock to USB-connected Elektron devices DT2, DN2, AHFX. The OT receives (and sends when the micro.clock is disabled) clock over 5-pin DIN via USB route translation by a CME router. Note: Tiny clock fluctuations of ±0.10 (~ avg.) BPM occur at most BPMs (excluding those whose PPQN cleanly align with the resolution of the connected devices' clock timers, usually running at 1 kHz (1 ms) or 48 kHz). Over USB, this is normal and expected, and is imperceivable in music applications. Also, note I have not tested any BPMs higher than 180 (but have tested as low as 30). Read more
A basic hub, but I expected more at this price point. It's actually 2 four port hubs cascaded, so you can't use it if you are at the end of the hop limit, and both hubs are single-TT, so if you are using multiple low or full speed devices, things get strange. Another reviewer stated theirs as being multi-TT, but the units I received weren't, so I wonder if the board was cost-reduced between theirs and my experience. Power supply is included, which is nice, but the hub will identify as self-powered, even when it is not, though that is not a terribly uncommon behavior. Read more
I just received my hub and wanted to test it out with a Raspberry Pi. I plugged the hub into the wall and then connected the hub to the Pi. As I grabbed the power connector for the Pi I noticed that the monitor had clicked on and the Pi was beginning to boot up (without having the power connected, it was pulling power through the USB data connection). One caveat to the awesomeness that this is; The system hangs when I connect a Mini 150M USB WiFi Adapter with Antenna. The WiFi adapter works fine when connected directly to the Pi, or to a different powered hub I have. Unfortunately I do not have another WiFi adapter model to test if it is this specific combination or not. Read more
