Need more USB 3 ports? This is a good choice

I've been using a smaller StarTech 4 port USB3 hub for over a year with excellent results. I needed more ports for my astronomy equipment and stuck with StarTech. This 7 port USB 3 Hub can be used either powered or unpowered. If your USB 3 connections have minimal current draw there is no need to use the included power supply. However, some devices need more current than is provided via the USB bus. This hub will serve this purpose just fine. The upgrade from the smaller 4-port hub to this one was seamless. No issues or glitches. . . It just works as it was expected to. It works with my ACER Win 10 Pro laptop with no set-up required or drivers to download. It was plug and play. I've been using this for over a month with no issues or dropped connections. The plastic housing seems a bit light weight and on the flimsy end of the spectrum. However, the USB ports and power connection perform well. No issues with the overall build quality. This is a good choice for a reasonably priced powered / unpowered 7 port USB 3 Hub. Read more

So good I had to buy a second one.

I love these ports, they are fast (USB 3.0) convenient and seem to work every time. I have had my first port since 2019 and the other I just bought last year to give me more drive access at once. They are kinda bulky (but not obnoxious) and require power to run effectively, but besides that they are great. I feel like the bulkier design makes it sturdier as I have had my thinner ones break after months. I love these hubs. Read more

Recommended brand, generous number of USB ports

My need was to have a high quality USB 3.0 hub that could handle high speed video data for a 2nd monitor set up. I have a Linux-based laptop (12 yo Lenovo ThinkPad) with only 3 USB-1 ports. I have way more peripherals than that. My legacy hub was an older and slower 2.0 hub. So this is what I did: I connected the StarTech to an available USB port on the laptop. I plugged my display link adapter to a port on StarTech and used one other port for my external sound. This allows StarTech to deliver adequate data bandwidth (more than adequate) to my 2nd monitor. I then had my slower USB hub to use for my other slower low-bandwidth legacy devices (keyboard, mouse, web cam and external hard drive. (Tech note: the external hard drive can map a high bandwidth 3.0 to the laptop through the 2.0 hub via a special kung-fu maneuver that's beyond the scope of this review. StarTech hub has more than adequate number of USB ports. It looks to be built solidly and at a competitive price. It worked right out of the box and is a recommended brand especially if you're a Linux user such as myself. Read more

Great hub for linux, macos, and windows

I use this hub as part of a shared dual-computer workstation with multiple HID devices and a webcam, and it has been extremely stable. The hub identifies as a VIA Labs controller and behaves like a proper standards-compliant USB hub on macOS and Linux (Arch Linux in my case) with no driver installation required. Devices enumerate consistently at boot and after repeated reconnects, and I have not observed USB resets or devices disappearing under load. If you want a USB hub that behaves predictably across operating systems, this one does exactly what it is supposed to do. Read more

DO NOT BUY

Do not buy this piece of junk! At first, I was quite pleased with this multi-USB port extension, as my laptop only offers one USB port. However, after a few months use, I suddenly experienced dropped connections to my external hard drive I'd plugged into this unit. I'm an author and will never trust writing anything onto my C-Drive. The problem escalated with an occasional problem trying to perform a simple copy procedure from the C-Drive to my backup external drives. I figured it must be my laptop. So, I had to reboot and start over. The copy issue grew worse...and during this time, I also purchased a dozen San Disk Thumb drives from Amazon...and this USB StarTech would simply not recognize it. I hooked the San Disk up to a USB extension cord...that worked...so, it was not the thumb drive (which, incidentally, works just fine on my Dell desktop). Copying has now become hit or miss to the point where I've had it. I'd purchased three of these units...all are past return dates. Save yourself a major headache and avoid this product. Read more
