Great to have in more than one room

I have two of these in my house, and I rely on them to tell me the indoor and outdoor temperatures. They also keep time. After a little over two years, one unit died and I had to replace it, which was a no-brainer. The second unit is still working perfectly. This is easy to set up and not obtrusive, so you can set it anywhere you want. The larger numbers can be set for indoors or outdoors, and to Fahrenheit or Celsius. Definitely recommended. Read more

Good thermometer, price is right. Outdoor sensor not sealed though...so FYI about that.

I had a wireless digital indoor/outdoor thermometer from another company that lasted nearly 20 years before the outdoor sensor became completely unreliable. I did some research, and it appears that most of the cheaper overseas-made indoor/outdoor wireless thermometers have mixed reviews. It was pretty hard to sift through, and no clear winner emerged. So, I decided to get this Taylor thermometer because it was so cheap...it is hard to go wrong in the $10-12 range. I've had it about a month now. I like it, and it has worked reliably...never dropping the outdoor sensor (which is about 40' away outside). Pros: -Very simple to use. My old thermometer connected to some kind of radio signal to set its time. However, that didn't always work. I actually like the manual time function on this...works like any other clock. -Large display (and you can choose whether you want the indoor or outdoor to be the larger numbers on top). -Viewing angle good (my old thermometer was barely visible off-axis) Cons: -Memory recall function (ie low/high temp) is an obscure button on the back. I've had to turn it over to look at and find the button because I use it infrequently. I suppose if you did this a lot you'd memorize where it is. Really weird though, that the easy button on the front is the one that swaps the display around...something that you would do one time (to your preference) and then never touch again. -Outdoor sensor is NOT sealed against water. THIS COULD BE A BIG NEGATIVE, so beware. I never even dreamed that this was something to worry about. My old sensor had a rubber seal around the entire battery door, so that it could get wet. I just assumed they would all be this way. Not so with the Taylor 1730 (even the instructions say to basically avoid getting it wet). It doesn't really matter too much for where I've placed my sensor, but I'm guessing for some people this could be a deal-breaker...so that's why I mention it. Read more

Accurate

Works really well, accurate. The screen is a little hard to read at angles, but not a big deal. Haven’t used it in really cold weather yet so we don’t know how well it will work then. Otherwise great for the price. Read more

Not "uncompromising quality and precision."

This is my second Taylor . The first is still working and the thermometer paired up with the new sensor right away. Tested the new one against with other thermometers, and none read the same. Which one to believe? Well we have depended on the old Taylor, so that's our standard. But several problems with the new one right out of the clam shell (eew, hate clam shell packaging). Taylor is a very old company and should know better than to glue the instructions to the cardboard backing. As careful as I was, the glue still tore a good size hole in the instructions right in the paragraph about operating. And it is written in print so small even a mouse could not read it. And to save ink (an otherwise noble gesture) the text is so light as to make it nearly impossible to read. Ok, who reads instructions anyway? Well, I do. When I set up the old and new Taylor thermometers next to the new sensor, the indoor/outdoor temperature readings were different by 1-2F. So, what difference does a few degrees make, really? Well, not much if you're deciding whether to wear a jacket or a coat to go outside to the mailbox but a whole lot when it comes to frost and your garden or frozen pipes in a wall. And if I told Amazon I'd only pay $9.49 instead of $11.49, (hey it's only a few dollars difference) they'd tell me where to take a vacation. In the ad Taylor says, "uncompromising quality and precision.", but they did not meet that expectations and promise. Minus 1 Star for the instructions and minus another Star for the temperature differences. For me, it's 3 Stars. Read more

GOOD, BASIC INDOOR/OUTDOOR THERMOMETER

PRO - Accurate, basic, not too big, easy to read and good looking. Uses total of 4 common AAA batteries. Great feature of this thermometer is that you can choose to make either the Indoor or the Outdoor temperature display large. Can display either Fahrenheit or Celsius. Remote sensor is small and has decent range. CON - Display unit designed to sit on a flat surface with built-in stand. To mount on a wall you’ll need double-sided tape. Display unit has a clock but the digits are too small. Doesn’t measure relative humidity. Read more
