Timex Waterbury or Zenith EL Primero Original / LONG TERM REVIEW 2025 UPDATE 2 year plus owner!

MogieOctober 30, 2023✓ Verified purchase

The media could not be loaded. The Timex Waterbury Chronograph is a gorgeous and highly versatile timepiece perfect for daily wear. While it's clear that a luxury watch like the Zenith El Primero Original is a far superior mechanical instrument, that isn't the point of this comparison. For those who admire the classic style of the El Primero but not its price tag, the Timex is an absolute gem. The comparison is based purely on its similar, handsome appearance. Here’s a direct look at how they stack up: Head-to-Head Comparison Model: Zenith El Primero Original vs. Timex Waterbury Chronograph Movement: The Zenith runs on its legendary automatic movement, while the Timex uses a highly accurate and low-maintenance quartz movement. Case Size: The Zenith features a classic 38mm case, whereas the Timex has a more modern 41mm case. Crystal: You get a premium sapphire crystal on the Zenith, compared to a durable mineral crystal on the Timex. Water Resistance: The Zenith is rated to 100 meters, while the Timex provides a solid 50 meters of water resistance, which is more than enough for everyday use. Price: This is the key difference. The Zenith retails for around $8,600, while the Timex Waterbury offers its great looks for about $250. The Timex Waterbury Chronograph is a phenomenal value. It allows you to enjoy the aesthetic of an iconic luxury watch without the significant financial investment. It's the perfect choice to buy and enjoy today, while you reward yourself with the Zenith when the time is right. Core Specifications Movement: Powered by a reliable and accurate quartz movement, ensuring minimal maintenance. Case Diameter: Offered in a range of versatile sizes, typically from 39mm to 42mm. Case Material: Built from durable stainless steel, often with premium mixed finishes. Crystal: Protected by a scratch-resistant mineral crystal. Water Resistance: Rated for daily use, commonly between 50 and 100 meters. Lug Width: Features a standard 20mm lug width for easy strap customization. Key Features Chronograph Functionality: The watch’s defining feature is its stopwatch function, operated by two pushers that control the sub-dials for tracking elapsed time. Tachymeter Bezel: Many models include a tachymeter scale on the bezel for measuring speed, honoring the watch's racing heritage. Dial Design and Details: Applied Indices: Often uses applied markers for a refined, three-dimensional look. Date Window: Includes a practical date complication. Lumed Hands: Features luminous hands for low-light visibility. INDIGLO® Backlight: Many models include Timex's signature feature, allowing the entire dial to illuminate for superior legibility in the dark. Strap and Bracelet Options: Available with a wide variety of choices: Stainless Steel Bracelets: Adjustable for a custom fit. Leather Straps: Often sustainably sourced and equipped with quick-release bars. Fabric Straps: Provide a more casual, rugged aesthetic. Overall Impression The Timex Waterbury Chronograph successfully blends style and function. Its reliable quartz movement makes it a perfect "grab-and-go" watch, while thoughtful details provide a quality that exceeds its price point. It's an excellent package of style, features, and value. Beautiful Watch, Weak Leather Strap

arcMarch 7, 2026✓ Verified purchase

4/5 – The watch itself is beautiful and a very reasonable option for the price. It has the classic Timex look and feels like a solid everyday watch. That said, it is still a Timex so expectations should stay realistic. The main issue is the leather band. The quick release pins sit very close to the edge of the strap, which causes the leather to stretch. After only light use it already looks like it could fail in the future. The watch itself is great, but the strap could definitely be better. Read more

No need for a Rolex Daytona or Omega Speedmaster now that I have this watch

BertimusDecember 1, 2025✓ Verified purchase

Looks stellar. I chose the reverse panda. My only gripe beside the weak lum is the leather band. Not the quality (excellent Red Wing Shoes brand leather), just the hole cutouts has it fit too loose or too tight. And 20mm strap isn't stable on my wrist. Would have liked 22mm or even 21mm. Has decent weight and premium look. Stunning really. The green seconds hand is not very legible and a hair off of alignment but I'm not bothered. My Seikos were worse. I like the watch so much...I will get another in the same colorway as a back-up, in case it is discontinued or I crack the crystal. $164 well spent. Read more

High value, low cost watch

Joseph W.August 16, 2025✓ Verified purchase

I love this watch, its slightly smaller then what I typically wear but it's not so small that it could be confused with a womens watch. Very classic and elegant looking watch. The crown is a screw down crown so if you've never owned one please be aware before you crank down on it or assume your watch is broken. This is a good feature if you are a more active individual. This is the perfect watch for something slightly dressier but not gawdy. It feels like a high quality piece as well. I could easily see it being confused for a much higher priced watch. Read more

There are minimal instructions on how to adjust the links on this watch. It was not easy to adjust at all. Other than that, it’s a nice watch to wear Read more
