Refurb Getting it Done

I worry about buying refurbished devices online. When buying vintage devices, you can never be sure of the state, and you have to trust the vendor to address any issues. I purchased a Toshiba VCR/DVD combo- legacy tech with a ton of moving parts. On arrival there was an issue. But the seller included contact information in the shipment, and was immediately responsive, helped to resolve the issue, and now- I have a fully functional, vintage VCR/DVD combo that I can use to digitize my old tapes. A quality device that works as advertised. The refurb is getting it done. I would buy again from this vendor. Read more

Great Product!!

I bought this as a scratch and dent. It was fairly inexpensive, but I was worried it wouldn't work with the new digital changes coming up. Some feedback was that the instructions to install were difficult. Mine did not come with instructions, so I downloaded them off the web. I'm am totally technically challenged, but I CAN READ!! I had it hooked up in about 10 minutes (back and forth to the computer) We've had no problems with it, and if it doesn't work in 2009, OH, WELL!!! Read more

Good, but.

I know it's typical of many electronics to come with little or no documentation, but the Toshiba manual that comes with this unit is fairly pitiful. One warning: it won't allow you to monitor the dubbing process if you use an HDMI cable to connect this DVR to your TV. Switching in and out of HDMI mode is laborious and just an issue of bad design. I havent figured out a workaround yet but I'm sure I'll find one eventually. I also respectfully disagree that the dubbing and recording process are easy and instinctive. This is a good unit once I spent a long weekend figuring out how to make it do what it says. Read more

Good quality, poor user interface, hdmi not available for all functions

This product has copied 10 VCR tapes to DVD successfully. It also plays VCR tapes and DVD to your tv/receiver. Although it has hdmi you must also have a lower res connection such as component video. Many operations will not work over hdmi. As an example the on line display will not work on hdmi when copying a VCR tape. User interface is poor. The quality of the hardware is good. Read more

Toshiba D-VR5 DVD Play/Record w/VCR

EXACTLY what I was NEEDED! This is no toy! There seems to be some negative comments due to the Lag-Time between the time that you turn on the recorder, and when it opens the tray: --- Patience, Grasshopper! --- this machine does so much more! IT'S A COMPUTER! Allow it to go through it's boot-up process, after which the responses are just as fast as any other DVD Player It's a tool, you need to read the manual throughly but once you understand the concept, it's very simple. AT LAST! I can transfer my MASSIVE VHS Library! Unfortunately some had al- ready begun to degrade. BACK & FORTH!!!! Far Out! VHS to DVD & Vice Versa! Aside from the ability to handle the newest blank media (includ. RAM & DOUBLE SIDED Disks) the best part is being able to record off my TV! It's every bit as easy to record multiple 5 minute segments of a newsreel, or a 6 hour congressional meeting at the touch of a button as it had been on my old VCR. TV, VCR, Now DVD-R <--- All TOSHIBA! ;) I just keep coming back! Read more

Works great.

Easy to set up. A little tricky to label the DVDs, but after reading the directions and making a couple DVDs it is pretty simple. Was great to get some old VHS tapes changed to DVDs. Read more

Pretty good, but for the price?

This DVD player works pretty well with a couple of exceptions. I bought it because I wanted to have a player/recorder that could read any disc. It does read more media types than my other player, but not HD. Also, one little annoying thing: it takes a good long time to get the disc tray to open after you turn it on...not sure why. So if you don't mind waiting to load your disc and you don't need to play HD discs than this is a good machine. Read more
