I finally got this hooked up and was able to watch one of the DVDs I couldn't watch in my old DVD player. Every time I tried to watch one of my DVDs the movie would freeze over and over. Recently I had the Geek Squad come and help me hook this up and tried to watch the DVD and it worked without any freezing. Thank you very much. Martin Read more

After doing lots of research online about DVD/VHS players, I chose the Toshiba because it offered the best features for the price, and generally had better reviews than other products out there. After receiving the new machine, things worked fine for about a week, after which the DVD player would no longer read DVDs. After inserting a DVD it gave a "reading" message for a long time before finally saying "error". Oddly enough, the machine would read CDs just fine! I called Toshiba about the problem, but they couldn't help. Resetting the machine by unplugging it for 5 minutes availed nothing. Finally, I just decided to return it. I'm going to buy the Sony SLV-D570H to replace it. Both have HDMI outputs (DVD only), but hopefully the Sony machine won't break down on me after one week. In terms of features with the Toshiba, the skip commercials feature overshot the commercials by three or four minutes. Programming the machine to record television programs was difficult and confusing (for context, I'm 27 years old and somewhat of a tech expert). LED display on the machine itself was minimal and hard to read, and only showed hours and minutes when playing DVDs instead of hours, minutes, seconds, and chapter number. When changing television channels, the number appeared on the TV screen, but did not show on the player itself--an inconvenience for those who like to look at the machine to remember which channel they are on. The remote, while backlit and "universal", was hard to use, and had no "last channel" button. The onscreen menu that appeared when a CD was playing was nice; its too bad the rest of the menu systems were so poorly implemented. If I were looking into DVD/VHS players with HDMI upconversion, I would probably steer clear of this machine, the Samsung DVD-V9650 (terrible reviews online because of malfunction and poor video quality), and the JVC HR-XVC38B and HR-XVC39S (no MP3 CD playback). That basically leaves the Sony, which I hope turns out better than the Toshiba. I guess they really are trying to push consumers to buy the more expensive machines (DVD recorders, Blu-ray, HDDVD). I bought the product based on two great features for me: USB port & HDMI conexion capabilities. The USB feature works fine once you find out that there is a short lapse-time to activate it between the moment you turn on the device and the DVD is loaded. Once it starts reading the Disc, there is no way to switch to USB mode. But the most dissaponting fact with my experience, is that after 1 month of use, the image quality started deteriorating considerably, to a point that it looks I'm watching from a Betamax casette-video! I haven't even taken the time to go through the hassle of reconecting cables, or switchin from HDMI to S-Video or Digital, cause I dont think its worth it. Bottomline, the quality of the video decreases to a very unacceptable level. Just a note, my TV is a brand new HDTV 50" Plasma and the HD channels are showing some incredibly awesome quality images. Since I dont have time to box it and return it, or even to find someone to give it away to, I am just trashing it. Read more

I bought this unit to replace a zenith combo player that had bitten the dust. PLeased with the features (DIVX A REAL PLUS) and the speed at which it functions. With my zenith it was like 3 minutes from the point at which you put in the DVD until it started playing. This is much quicker and takes up less space to boot. Pleased with the purchase one month into my ownership. Read more

I would not suggest you buy this if you plan to play cd's on this unit. The picture quality is excellent for dvd's and only good for video tapes! We bought this to use as our cd player as well, but cd's skip and stop at any given moment. I recommend the unit if all you want is a dvd/vcr. Read more
