Wonderful Value, Amazon

Nigel BaileyMarch 17, 2010✓ Verified purchase

This DVD player was purchased for bedroom use. I was very pleased with the ease of setup and the excellent video quality. From unpacking to full installation took all of 5 minutes. I only use the Component Outputs and L/R audio feeds. This is a basic DVD player which only has Component and Composite Video outputs. Sound is by means of L/R and DD RF. In these respect this player excels. Note that there is no S-Video output, or Optical Audio output. In other words the Toshiba is an excellent choice for regular TV's. It is not intended for use with HD TV's and so forth. In comparison with Sony, Philips and RCA entry level players it certainly gives a better video quality. The ability to handle damaged disks is also very good, (I do keep some for checkout purposes). The Toshiba SD4200 can also output 480 P which might be useful for some users. I did not check this out. Summing up, an excellent player with all the basic features, at a very attractive price. Highly recommended. Read more

A very nice little DVD player

V. GreenJanuary 6, 2010✓ Verified purchase

I really enjoy this DVD player. It is sleek and slim which makes it nice. The playback quality is very clear. Its hard to see from the picture on the website if the player has fast forwarding capability but upon receiving it, it does and it has lots of other features not mentioned in the description which was simply an added bonus. It is a great player and is nicely priced. I am very happy I purchased this product. Read more

No problems except noisy sometimes

A RunnioFebruary 22, 2010✓ Verified purchase

I would recommend this if you are looking for an inexpensive player to play regular DVDs. The player looks good, the remote is decent and it's easy to use. So far it has played every DVD I have put in it without any problems. The only complaint I have is that whenever it's loading a menu or when you start the movie it's very noisy and seems to take longer than other DVD players. However, once the movie starts it goes all the way though without making any noise, so really it's not that big of a deal. Read more

Does what it's supposed to do

David K.February 27, 2010✓ Verified purchase

I've had no problems with this DVD player. It does what it's supposed to do; it plays DVDs (among other formats) with no hitches. Pros: -inexpensive -quiet -very light -quick load time -audio sounds nice -100x fast-forward and rewind Neutral: -remote is fickle, you have to point directly at the player -would rather have the on button on the left and open/close on the right -movie stops when you go to setup Cons: -no time display, only chapters -didn't really notice a difference with night mode Read more

Didn't play DVDs. Not a good attribute for a DVD Player.

Maybe I just got a lemon, but this player didn't play any DVDs I tried in it. It seemed to power up just fine, but I never could get a disc to actually play--just a bunch of motorized mechanical noises came from it. I returned it to Amazon and ordered a different brand. Obviously, a lot of people love this player so mine could be a fluke, but since basic DVD players are so ubiquitous these days, I figured why bother take a chance re-ordering the same model. A cheap dvd player

The player is cheap and easy to use. The problem with this player is that if your dvds has any scratches it tends to pause for a long while before skipping to the next chapter. Read more

Read the manual first

Russell I. BurnettOctober 14, 2009✓ Verified purchase

My less-than-enthusiastic review is based on what my expectations for the player were, not on its actual performance. I needed a cheap DVD player to go with a cheap TV I have that only takes S-Video input. So I bought this Toshiba SD4200 DVD player specifically because, at least at the time of purchase, both Amazon and the Toshiba website indicated that it had S-Video output. When it arrived, however, I discovered it did not (only component and RCA). A Toshiba rep confirmed the website error and apologized. To compensate, I had to buy an RCA to S-Video adapter, which luckily only cost about $10. Unfortunately, this was not my only disappointment. The image of the player on both Amazon and Toshiba would lead you to believe that the display includes track timing, when really the only thing that shows is the track number. Given that track timing and S-Video were the ONLY requirements I had in mind before buying a DVD player, I was rather irked to discover this. Another strange feature I've never seen before is the lack of track buttons on the player itself; you can only skip between tracks using the remote control. I should have noticed this before buying, since it's right there in the pictures, but it just didn't occur to me. This is only a minor annoyance, but it's still something that probably would have led me to purchase a different player, especially given the large number of available options. These problems could all have been avoided had I looked at the actual user manual from Toshiba online, which gave proper information and images. So I've learned to check the manual before buying electronics online, rather than just rely on basic information from the vendor and/or the manufacturer. As for the performance of the player, thus far I've not had any trouble with either CDs or DVDs (about two months of use). Overall, with the RCA/S-Video adapter in place I've grown content with the unit. I've had good experience with two other Toshiba products (portable hard drive, portable DVD player) and therefore anticipate this one will also wear well. Read more

Great value

You usually get what you pay for. In this case, I think this is a great product for the price. We bought this for a bedroom that gets infrequent use. We didn't need much, so we didn't want to spend much. The player/recorder in our family room costed almost 10 times as much. The picture from this Toshiba compares well with the more expensive unit. So far, we have had no problems. The TV in that room only has RCA jacks, so we didn't need anything more than what this unit had. Don't expect too much at this price and you will be pleasantly surprised. Read more
