Now, after two years

Malinger NowSeptember 15, 2023

Have not noticed any noisy operation as mentioned by a few reviewers. This one was made in Philippines. I don't know whether they manufacture or simply assemble there. Since I'm using a nine year-old Linux box, can't get full rated performance out of the drive but it is fast enough for my uses (with one exception). On standard Ext4 Partitions, I get very decent read and write speeds, around half of the rated spd for the drive. Running LUKS encrypted Partitions, however, write speed is painfully slow. I suspect this is mainly due to issues with the operating system (Debian) and the older computer hardware not handling file transfers well on the encrypted drive. Update 1: Found that the Caja 'file-manager' of my linux system is mainly responsible for the slow transfer speeds. The HD itself has been problem-free, so now 5-Star. I see that this drive is no longer available on Amazon but there is an updated version with 512MB cache here for $121. Update 2: at the 2-year mark, the drive is still operating smoothly. Upgrading from 4 to 5-Star.. Read more

Good, does the job

I've run WD/Seagate for years but decided to give Toshiba a try. I have two of these drives being used in a Raid 1 configuration and they have performed well over time, no issues with the drives, they just work as expected. Only minor complaint is they are kind of noisy which others here have commented on. I also have Seagate Exos enterprise drives which should be nosier than this Toshiba but they sound quieter compared to this drive. Read more

Noisiest HDD I've ever owned.

Elmer FuddFebruary 7, 2023

Just installed this as a secondary internal drive on my main PC. It's suitably sized for me current needs and it seems to function perfectly well except that it's constantly making noise, even when the system is mostly idle. When something requires a scan of the disk (e.g., MsMpEng, IIRC), it thunks and whirs constantly. It can be distracting, I'll have to see how that plays out over time. FWIW I have other Toshiba HDDs that do not do this. Not sure what the deal is with this one. SMART indicates no issues, again I'll have to see what happens over time. Read more

Best value for the price

Greg CallahanNovember 1, 2021

Having bought the older version with 128 Mb cache and being thrilled with its performance I jumped at the chance to get the new one with double the cache for only 4 dollars more. Transfer speeds are great and it's very quiet, silent in fact, I assume those commenting on theirs being load must have gotten defective drives as I said both of mine are completely silent. The only observation I have to make of the 256Mb cache drive is it seems slow to load the first time after a reboot, It performs perfectly after that so isn't an issue for me. All in all I'd highly recommend this drive to anyone needing a reliable, fast and best of all CMR drive. Read more

Great drive, great price

dcMay 6, 2022

After comparing a number of options and reviews I ultimately decided to go with the 4 TB Hitachi HDD to clone my previous 3 TB drive that was starting to make noises. Very glad I chose this one as it seems a great value for the price vs. some of the other hard disk manufacturers. It is definitely a hair noisier than my old drive was (not by much, honestly) when it was new so if this is a huge concern it might be worth it to you to look at other options. For me this isn’t a deal breaker and I’ve been quite happy with its performance the few months I’ve had it up and running. Read more

Great HDD for the money

Nicholas C.January 13, 2024

When it comes to TB per dollar, you still cant beat a hard drive. I put this in one of my friends computers because he's a gamer and he downloads lots of games. Games these days are getting huge so you need a place to store them all. If you don't want to spend $150 for a 4TB SSD, this is where you should be. It's fast enough for most games, reasonably priced, and fairly quiet as well. It seems some folks have gotten HDD's that have been returned or were of a different line of Toshiba HDD's, but I am happy to report my model numbers matched the box and my friend who is a very avid gamer has had no complaints. Loud and prone to failure

Justin L. BrownFebruary 10, 2024

Bought this in December of 2023, and by the end of January it was already starting to fail. This drive was being used a bulk storage drive in my main system, so it saw daily use, although nothing too aggressive that would have caused what I experienced. Since day 1, the drive's seek activity was incredibly loud, far louder than the Seagate drive it had replaced. The clicking was noticeable anytime the drive did anything. Annoying, but not a total deal breaker. HOWEVER, the drive began displaying Uncorrectable Sector Errors by the end of the first month of use. Seeing these kinds of errors so soon is a terrible sign for the longevity of the drive, and it was swiftly returned to Amazon and replaced with a different brand. Will never be buying drives from Toshiba again after this. Read more
