As an artistic enthusiast, I've always had a... less than favourable opinion of such clinky, churning, somewhat impure noise as is that of the kazoo. Even the childish recorder flute was less painful to hear. However, upon the chance of an amazing deal, I decided, "Why not? I'll get one just for giggles." I placed the order and within only three days, my purchase had arrived. When the package was received, I carefully placed it upon my bed and proceeded to viciously tear at the white plastic seal, taking an almost-30 minute break mesmerized by the bubble wrap underneath. After the little air sacs were finally drained of all possible entertainment, I rolled over to take a nap only to be stabbed in the side by the instrument, causing me to yip in surprise. I angrily fondled my blanket until the blue underbelly of the beast finally revealed itself. I cursed it's metallic tip, comparing it's sharp point to a spiky metal death trap I had once heard of. After being satisfied by the amount of curses and middle fingers I sent in it's direction, I finally picked it up, analyzing the incredibly simple design of it. Being a clarinet player, I attempted to purse my lips in the same way on the kazoo's opening as I would my trusty reed instrument. However, several huffs and puffs later, I found I could procure no other sound than that of my breathing through the hollow object. Irritated, I searched online for the correct method of extracting a proper sound from the thing. Hum into it. That was all. It was so simple, I felt ridiculous that such a simple act could have slipped my mind. But if the playing was so easy, it would sound awful, right? Wrong. After fiddling with my grip on the kazoo and warming up my voice, I found that the melodies I sang returned very clearly to me in the form of bees buzzing and meadow breezes blowing. It was amazing. It was like pressing my ear up against my CRT tv as it struggled for cable connection, except that it was now serenading me. The grating sound of a thousand grains of sand rushed past my fingers and fluttered into the air and blinded me. I was tearing up. Despite the strange sensation of outright humming into a metal tube, something within the sound was pleasant. I cried and cried till I could no longer hum into the kazoo, allowing it to drop to the floor as my arms fell limp into my lap. My voice was beautiful. Thank you, Grover Kazoo, for allowing me to realize, through your obnoxious buzz, that I have a magical singing voice. Your purpose has been fulfilled. I now ascend to be with my people, the geese. Since purchasing this kazoo, I've been muted from 12 discord voice channels, straight up kicked from 5 of the same, had moderators audibly groan every time I bring it up, and some users will up and leave at the beginning of one of my renditions of "Bonetrousle". Little rude, but understandable. The fun doesn't stop on the Internet, either! I bring this little guy with me just about anywhere in my backpack, and you'd be a little afraid to know how often this thing comes in handy. A Capella time in the car suddenly goes from trash-tier to at least decent when you've got this handy little backup. It's also rather fantastic for creating your own theme music whenever you actually have to do something. Taking out the trash became at least 15 times more interesting when I'm humming the Metal Gear Solid main theme and skulking about like William Shatner trying to act out a James Bond action sequence. My friends still sometimes frisk me before we head into movie theaters. Oh... right I ought to actually review the kazoo, too. It's a cute little design, the aluminum (?) frame is pretty durable and withstands everything from standard play to being thrown off a balcony by Ryan, a known hater of music. The diaphragm (or whatever - the little bit of paper inside that makes it buzz) seems to be a bit of wax paper that can be subbed out by unscrewing that little round bit on the top. I recommend using a bit of duct tape to both add a bit of grip and prevent your thumb and/or forefinger from being just mutilated by that nice, thin aluminum edge. Seriously though, dunno why I tried changing it out - Haven't really *needed* to - just got curious. Overall - well worth the money to become the best musical pariah since the Pied Piper himself. I purchased this as a gift for a great friend, and I must say: of all the kazoos I've heard and had the fortune of playing on, this kazoo is by far the best. The mere fact that this kazoo is made of metal adds a great deal of resonance alone. I am very impressed, as is my talented friend. To reiterate what someone else said, this is "everything I could ask for in a kazoo." Read more
In my old age I have decided to learn how to play some musical instruments. Since my father and brother were both singers I figured I just may have some hidden musical talent as well. I purchased two Chinese flutes, two recorders, a total of five harmonicas and two kazoos. First off, I realize the kazoo is not really a musical instrument and is something young kids fool with; nevertheless, when one is as unskilled as I am in music, the beginning is where I need to be. For those not familiar with the kazoo it DOES NOT make a sound of its own but rather amplifies a tune when you hum or throw your voice into the large end. Unfortunately, I found the plastic kazoo worthless and could not hum anything through it; however, the Grover-Trophy gold/blue Metal Kazoo proved to be a great beginner’s music tool. I am able to hum a wide variety of songs through my kazoo. The most important thing is that I am having fun with it. It is also a very reasonably priced instrument. If you like to hum music you might want to check out this metal kazoo. I would not recommend the plastic model but I also admit to not being an expert on the kazoo. There may be some quality plastic kazoos, but I will stick with the metal models. Rating: 4 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: The Samurai Heart: An old warrior’s poetic tribute). Read more
