Got this for my 11 year old son. He used to do some beginner wood whittling with his grandpa with a super dull pocket knife when he was just 6 years old up to the last couple years. He thought it was so cool. He is now 11 and I thought he’d be capable of doing some whittling on his own with supervision. In a world of video games, virtual reality, etc. which most kids his age are slightly obsessed with and addicted to (including my son) I was wanting to get him something that would be fun, entertaining, and exciting that didn’t include screen time. My son loves to draw, paint, and build but has gotten too old for the typical “crafts” *cry face from a sad mom* That said, it’s been a transition period for us both. I was afraid he wouldn’t like this gift since it isn’t a play station gift card LOL. To my pleasant surprise, he actually loved it. & even more pleasantly surprising, him and I have totally enjoyed doing some wood whittling together! It’s hard sometimes for me as a single mom of a preteen to find things to connect with him on…. Most things I come up Are “not cool” or “lame” and this is new territory for me! When he was younger it was a lot easier. All of this is to say that this gift was such an awesome gift for my creative kid! It takes practice, but it comes with a photo guide Of each tool and how to use it. It also comes with stencils as well and instructions to make a wooden spoon. It comes with a decent size pack of wood blocks, cut proof gloves, cut proof finger tape… a nice faux leather roll up case for all the knives and covers for the blades. I think this kit is perfect for a beginner pre teen but also think it suits adults as well. It’s not a toy so keep that in mind! They are REAL, SHARP knifes / blades… but for his age he is capable of using. We have had so much fun together whittling and figuring out how to make different shaped handles and stuff. Each blade is very functional and it comes with most of everything you need for small wood projects. So far the blades and handles of the knives are durable and can be sharpened! The only thing this kit is missing is a rasp which would be like a metal file that removes larger amount of wood at a time for shaping or hollowing out a piece of wood. I can buy a pack or three separately for around $20. They aren’t absolutely necessary but I find that it would be definitely useful and make this kit EVEN BETTER as my son isn’t the most patient person and he would like something like that to help carve out large sections and smooth them out. What came in the mail is a decent size package with full size items inside , not tiny little flimsy knives. The roll up case is good size as well. So this doesn’t look like a small little piddley set from china. No offense. I’d highly recommend this item to any beginner young or adult and even intermediate, for small, indoor table sized wood craft projects from wood spoons, animal carvings, knife handles, etc. Read more
Bought this for my husband and he is loving it. He has played with all the tools and has already carved a few little pieces. The blades are good and sharp, and they are easy to hold.
