Great iron for the price!

A great soldering iron especially for beginners. No issues, quick heat up and cool down with built in sleep function. Been using it for a solid month now with no problems or any annoying issues. Read more

VERY impressed with this inexpensive solder station!

Very impressed with this cheap little soldering station. I have only taken it out of the box and tested it on a few samples so far. Heats up extremely fast and comes with quite a few tips. If this unit lasts over a year I will feel like I got a $200 quality level station for under 40 bucks. I am using it for for automotive style situations with wire gauges in the 20 to 8 gauge range. I can't say enough how impressed I am with it. Read more

Some flaws, but overall nice station for the "weekend warrior."

I've been tinkering with my guitars lately and wanted to upgrade from a cheap soldering pen to a station for better control. This fit the bill for me well, given the price point and features. As far as the packaging goes, it was as expected, however, my box only included the fine point tip. Regardless, I was going to buy more tips anyway, but still was disappointed. After assembling per instructions (which I've since misplaced...) I was ready to test. Turned the unit on and set my temp (using °F). I was able to solder using the spool they included and it seemed to work well, however I was a bit disappointed with the solder as it didn't seem to be at the temp I had set (300°F). After bumping it up, it performed much better. I knew I had to calibrate this (actual temp was lower then set temp), but I didn't have a 100% accurate thermometer to use, so I estimated. After worrying about it being too hot, I purchased a soldering thermometer reader and finally calibrated to a tolerance range I was comfortable with (+\- 10°F). Now liking this unit a lot for my small projects and occasional use on expensive guitar electronics! Pros: -Digital Readout -Easy assembly -Calibration options -Auto-off timer (w/multiple settings) Cons: -Mine was missing two tips -Instructions not readily available online (I emailed the company w/no response yet, but did find YouTube useful) -Calibration may be off "out of the box" no native support for actual readings -Spool can only mount on left side, which is fine for me but lefties may find this problematic -Helping hands may be too short and flexible for some projects that are bigger a/o heavier. All in all, this is worth the low cost for me. I did have to buy a thermometer to calibrate, but for the cost of this unit, I wasn't expecting pin-point accuracy or an auto-calibration feature. Another useful tool that could be included IMO is either/or a tip cleaner (not a sponge) and a de-soldering wick spool. Read more

It works! Already saved me about $80 doing a DIY repair on an electric chainsaw

Works! I used what came in this kit and followed a tutorial on youtube to desolder a connection point and then resoldered back on a switch that fell off of the ignition chip of my electric chainsaw when I overheated it. It worked, and my electric chainsaw is back up and running again! Worth the attempt in my opinion! It was a little nerve wracking and my solders look really bad because I have no skill what-so-ever at using the soldering iron yet - but I repaired a $109 electric chainsaw for about 1/3 of that price in tools. I was also not aware that I was going to need to remove the leftover solder from the connection point before soldering the piece back on - so that fact that the little suction tool that I needed to do that was already in the kit was pretty cool! Great little kit that functions well, I recommend it. Id say if anything was missing - I did need some glue for the components that I was reattaching that was not in this kit I just used some superglue that I already had on hand. Also, I used some rubbing alcohol on a Q-tip to clean the components. (Just things to be aware that you might need!) I'm also going to use this little kit to solder some replacement zippers onto an old backpack. All-in-all, its been a great buy! Read more

Tip not heating up correctly (Update)

I bought this soldering iron for occasional use on guitar repairs. Since I do not solder daily, this looked like A good choice for light duty. The first time I used it, I set the temperature to 700 degrees, and try to tin the tip. Even though it was set to 700, it would not melt the supplied solder. After about three minutes, I was able to tin the tip, but still not able to transfer enough heat to tin a piece of wire. I held the tip to the wire for over one minute but, it still did not transfer enough heat for the wire to tin. I tried using leaded solder to rule out the possibility that the supplied led free solder was the problem, but got the same results. Since there are so many positive reviews, I am assuming that there is something wrong with this unit. I am going to give it another chance and exchange this one and see if a replacement will heat the tip more accurately, If the replacement works, I will update my review. Update: I just received my replacement two days ago and finally got a chance to test it. The replacement works fine. I'm giving this a 5-star review because I got it for occasional soldering projects. The package comes with everything one would need to get started, and for the amount of use that I will be giving it, it will probably last years. I doubt this device will hold up for more than a year with heavy use. It's very functional but made of cheaper materials. Read more
