They work to stand my books, 5.25"x8", without the need of additional support. Adjustable base was perfect for my books of differing widths. Base is unintrusive to the art work on the front of my book covers. Also, the flat base helps to keep my books from being warped, unlike the stands that are curved. Overall I do enjoy these but with how far back the bottom piece sticks out, it makes it so the books sit away from the edge and hard to put things behind the books unless they can be positioned around the base of these.
