This coffee machine is awesome I highly recommend to anyone. It brews strong rich flavored coffee everytime and is perfect for making expresso shots and even iced coffee drinks as the expresso comes up creamy and flavorful. It heats up quickly and evenly so there’s is not long wait time. One of my favorite options is the ability to pour either one cup or two cups which allows you to use two small cups such as those tea sized for when company comes over or use q big mug and use both sides to get a rich flavorful 4 to 6z of coffee will still being strong and not water down. An important feature of this Havato espresso machine is that its instruction manual does NOT include a California Proposition 65 warning regarding potentially harmful chemicals. For many espresso machines that are sold on Amazon, the "Secure checkout" web page that is presented during the purchase process includes a CA Prop. 65 warning, but for at least one of those espresso machines, the "Secure checkout" web page includes no such warning and yet the instruction manual DOES include such a warning. However, for this Havato espresso machine, neither the "Secure checkout" web page nor the instruction manual includes a CA Prop. 65 warning, so I decided to keep this machine. The coffee brewed with the Havato espresso machine tastes somewhat better than coffee brewed with an Aeropress, but both coffees are very tasty. For brewing two double-shot cups of coffee, the Aeropress is simpler to use because both cups may be brewed simultaneously via the Aeropress, whereas the Havato requires filling the double-shot steel filter twice and brewing each cup of coffee separately. However, two single-shot brews could be brewed simultaneously by using the double-shot steel filter. Unlike some espresso machines, the Havato espresso machine does not provide the capability of adding supplemental hot water to the brewed espresso via the steam wand. However, this is not a serious shortcoming, because it is possible to add hot water by simply pressing the single-shot or double-shot button to initiate water flow, and then pressing that button again, or alternately returning the knob on the side of the machine to neutral (O) position, to stop the water flow when sufficient water has been dispensed. It is not necessary to remove the filter holder prior to dispensing additional hot water to brewed espresso, because the coffee has already been mostly extracted via the espresso brew cycle. I prefer to brew an "extended espresso" by first brewing a double shot and then brewing a single shot without removing the filter holder. Also, unlike some espresso machines, the Havato machine does not permit you to alter its programming in order to dispense either more or less water during its brewing cycle. Some other espresso machines allow you to modify the default amount of water dispensed. The plastic spoon and tamper that is supplied with the espresso machine is inadequate because the tamper diameter is less than 51mm, which allows uncompressed coffee around the inner circumference of the metal filter. This defect is easily remedied by purchasing a 51mm aluminum coffee tamper for less than $10. The Havato instruction manual does not discuss 51mm paper filters. Such a filter, placed on top of the tamped coffee in the metal filter, will protect the brew head against becoming clogged by coffee grounds. The Havato instruction manual indicates that removal of the detachable water tank can result in some water leakage onto the espresso machine. This problem is easily remedied by pulling up on the water tank quickly to remove it instead of pulling up on it slowly. The Havato includes two filter holders: one for the single-shot and double-shot steel filters that accept ground coffee, and another for Nespresso pods. However, when using Nespresso pods, it is not possible to use a 51mm paper filter to remove the cafestol and kahweol oils that can raise LDL cholesterol (in addition to their reported beneficial anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and anti-diabetic effects). Also, Nespresso pods contain only a single shot of coffee, so a double shot requires brewing twice. In contrast, the steel filters allow brewing either a single shot or a double shot, and also allow the use of a 51mm paper coffee filter below the tamped coffee in the steel filter to remove the cafestol and kahweol oils if desired. I haven't tried using the steam wand to froth milk, because I find the SimpleTaste frother to be an easy way to create froth. Unlike some espresso machines, the Havato requires about 45 seconds to warm up before it is possible to brew coffee. This is not a serous shortcoming, because loading ground coffee into the metal filter cup requires at least 45 seconds. As is the case for other espresso machines, the water produced by the "warm-up" brew, which the instruction manual recommends prior to actually brewing coffee, smells of plastic. An immediately second warm-up brew smells less of plastic, and a third warm-up brew smells even less of plastic. I attempted running two descaling cycles with a descaling agent such as the "Urnex Full Circle Espresso Machine - 2 Single Use Packets - Descaling Powder" but those descaling cycles only diminished but did not remove the plastic smell. I then ran a descaling cycle with a 50:50 white vinegar/water mixture, followed by two descaling cycles with 1750ml of vodka for each cycle, followed by a descaling cycle with a 75:25 white vinegar/water mixture. Only after the fourth, 75:25 descaling cycle did the plastic smell finally disappear. I performed each descaling cycle by running a single-shot brew cycle (without coffee, of course), and then pausing the descaling cycle for 15 minutes, and then finishing the descaling cycle by running the remaining vodka or white vinegar/water mixture through the Havato.
