This little electric rice cooker from Moosum appealed to me not just because of cute color options – the aqua-colored one matches other small appliances in my kitchen – but because it could cook small quantities of rice. I have long cooked ½ cup (dry) rice on my stovetop in a small Corningware pot. Since getting a ceramic-top range, I’ve had inconsistent results when preparing my usual brown rice. Frustrating. The product description said this little appliance could be used to cook as little as one cup (dry) of rice, and it specifically called out brown rice. That sealed the deal. When the rice cooker arrived, I examined the directions. Nothing about brown rice, which requires more water and a longer cooking time than white rice. I reread everything. I looked back at the product description. Yes, it did say “brown rice.” So I sent a note to Moosum customer support, and got back a response that included this sentence, “Cooking brown rice is not recommended because the pot is too small and the increased water vapor will cause the rice to overflow.” ?!?!? The rep continued, “If you want to cook brown rice, it is recommended that the ratio of rice to water be 1:2, and only one cup of rice should be cooked at a time.” Okay, I guess. That takes us to the provided instructions. Using the included measuring cup for measuring both rice and water, as the label on the cooker illustrates, I cooked one cup of rice. I left it on warm so it would be ready to eat when I was. The result was not just too dry, but the rice was sticking to the bottom of the pot. Over several days, I tried following the instructions for both white and brown rice. And experimented. Rinsing and not rinsing. Soaking and not soaking. It was still coming out too dry and even crusty (photo), especially if it sat on warm for more than 20 minutes. So I went back and examined the literature that came in the box and realized that those instructions contradict what’s on the cooker itself. The (tiny type) printed Quick Guide says to measure the water using the embossed markings on the inner pot (photo). I compared the volume of the provided cup with the volume using the markings and found that the latter was significantly greater. Once I switched to that guidance, I got very good results with a cup of brown rice. I should take off one star each for the misleading product description (re brown rice) and contradictory user instructions, but I’ll take off just one star total and encourage Moosum to correct the discrepancies. The device is easy to use and can produce tasty rice – after considerable experimentation. The inner pot is easy to clean. The little cooker can be a handy appliance for small households that eat a lot of rice. Oh, yeah, and it’s cute. Read more

Really improved taste of plain rice, and with nice consistent texture! It’s super easy to use - so helpful for me to get a start on dinner while preparing the main course! The recipe booklet it comes with looks really good too, I’m anxious to try out the rice bowl dishes next. I just love the color. It looks like a cute happy cartoon character and doesn’t take much counter space at all which is great for a small kitchen. Easily feeds 3 x 4 people, with 3 cups rice & water. My family likes the rice much better than previous methods. Win Win! Read more

My old rice cooker broke. Ordered this one honestly just because the ship time was short. This one is definitely not as good as my old cooker. This one is very finicky and the water to rice ratio has to be EXACTLY right. I used to use my finger to measure but now I absolutely must use a measuring cup which isn’t the end of the world but it took a few batches to get it just right. The color is nice, the durability/weight/thickness of the inner pot all seem good. Read more
