These have become my "go to" when wiring a model railroad. Our club is in the process of rewiring an old layout and there are a lot of connections that have to be rerouted. It's so much faster and convenient to use the heat shrink/solder connectors. We have used them extensively to connect solid wires to stranded wires, by following different steps than the instructions. I first insert the stranded wire, stripped about ½ to ¾", then holding everything together, push the solid wire in the other end, similarly stripped to ¾ or ½", until the two overlap. If you choose a small enough connector where everything fits snugly, then using the heat gun it's all done in a few seconds. Be sure to allow the thing to cool before you move the wires - it takes 10 to 15 seconds or so for everything to cool down and reach its maximum strength. But once it's done, it is done. We've had no issues with bad connections (except when you get too aggressive and don't let things cool down and harden). All of my experience with these is low-voltage model railroad power - 12v DC, 16v AC, and 25v AC, so I can't comment on other higher voltage use. Read more

I got tired of the old plastic crimp connectors so I wanted to try this style. However, working on tight quarters where you don't have full access to the wires you are trying to connect to introduces limitations, because a wire stripper is needed and you have to have some wire length available to strip the wire well. In any case, you can loop the connector through to at least one side of the wiring, connect the wire leads, then move the connectors over the wire junction in the right location. With a heat gun, I tried to avoid over-heating but it's hard to get the solder portion to melt without melting the plastic first. Keep in mind there is residual heat being absorbed into the wire. I might try using flux and pre-tinning next time. The diameter of the connector was the perfect size and thickness for the specified wire gauge. The glue and heat shrink portion definitely helps make a nice water seal compared to any other methods. The electrical connection is working, but I will have to keep an eye on it because I just don't think the solder melted necessary. It's supposed to be between 280 and 320 deg F, so the 400 deg F setting on the heat gun should be fine, but it didn't feel like it. When I upped the temperature, the plastics were in meltdown mode. I haven't seen any videos that show exactly how to apply the heat for how long and what temperature. Read more

I work as a Mechanic at a local national chain. I bought these because my shop foreman/service manager refused to purchase some for the shop. How I use these is to slide both wires in (through the opposing holes) until they cross through the solder. I heat gun and het the ends to hold the wires in place. I then slide heat shrink over the entire connection and heat with the heat gun. You will see the center flatten out (when the solder melts). I remove the heat gun and lightly roll the center between my fingers. Perfect connections, and hella value for your money. I should've took pictures. I was fixing 30+ wires at the engine PCM connector in a 7.3 diesel. Read more
