Beautiful movie!!! This isn't a comedy. Is not a retarded movie with "cheer up, your alive!" theme. This is a drama... but it also have it's tints of comedy. Not Adam Sandler kind of comedy, but it comes up with a healthy fun dialog. Is just great! The actors are splendid here!! From Joseph Gordon Levitt to Angelica Huston, everybody play his part great! I could feel Adam's pain Angelica Huston felt like a normal mother (instead a Hollywood one) Anna Kendrick was lovely as the inexperienced psychiatrist Philip Baker Hall played here one of his MOST likable and hugable characters ever!! I mean.. take a pick! No character was wrong here. No actor was short to awesome! You owe it to yourself. You have to watch it at least once. Ohh... the sountrack? BRILLIANT!!!!!! The special features are also something else. I'm half way through it, but the deleted scenes are good, and the interviews to cast and crew were also great. Very insightful. 5 stars!! Read more

In my lifetime of movie watching, there haven't been many movies that made me cry. And there's been even less movies that have made me laugh AND cry. 50/50 did that. This movie was fantastic, one of my favorites of 2011 and of all time. Seth Rogen was both hilarious and touching, Joseph Gordon Levitt was fantastic, and the rest of the great cast gave outstanding performances. This is definitely a movie that I will own and re watch for many years to come. I already pre-ordered it and plan on watching it the day it arrives on my doorstep. I really hope this movie gets some Oscar nominations, because it really deserves it. Read more

Great, great film. It's a good mix of funny meets heartfelt without too much sap. Adam (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is diagnosed with a form of cancer which gives him a 50/50 shot at living. The film takes us through Adam's time fighting the cancer and we see how his relationships with friends, family, significant others, and fellow cancer patients play out over the course of his treatment. In fact, it's inspired by true events. I would highly recommend this film. Gordon-Levitt does a fantastic job in it and Seth Rogan is as funny as always. Great movie! Read more

My daughter and her friend went to see this movie, they are in their 20's and they both loved it, both of them laughed and cried their way through this movie just as I did when I finally got to watch it. Though cancer is a serious subject, the story handles the it with both heartfelt sadness and humor in appropriate measures. I highly recommend this movie to any ADULT, because there is a lot of adult content. Very moving and well acted, yet funny enough to lighten the load. Read more

Plot: Inspired by a true story, a comedy centered on a 27-year-old guy who learns of his cancer diagnosis, and his subsequent struggle to beat the disease. It is pretty right on as far as what young people with this diagnosis go through. Gordon-Levitt is one of our great young actors, and is just superb in the role. I actually even like Seth Rogen in this role, he is the goofy but loyal friend. I really don't know about it being very comedic really. I ALMOST gave it 4 stars but didn't quite make it. A solid 3.8 though. Director: Jonathan Levine Writer: Will Reiser Stars: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Anna Kendrick Read more

Having read a lot of reviews for this film when it was first released, unlike so many other reviewers here, I knew what to expect. Having been penned by Will Reiser, who happened to beat cancer himself, `50/50' is laced with a touch of humanity and honesty that really sets it apart from the usual Seth Rogen fare. It feels earnest and its intentions are pure and because of that the obvious faults (those Hollywood clichés and a generally terribly written `character') seem to be easily forgiven. So yeah, `50/50' isn't perfect by any means, but it tries hard enough to reach a point of warmth and acceptable enjoyment. Here we have the story of Adam, a young man who has been suffering from back pain that winds up being a rare form of cancer. This is, obviously, a hard blow to Adam, but it also trickles down to his friends, family and lover. His girlfriend Rachel, a tad self-concerned and cold, undertakes taking care of him, which is harder for her than she imagined. His best friend Kyle uses humor and the kindness of others to enrich his sick friend's love life (because girls each that cancer stuff up, apparently), as well as his own. His mother is already slightly neurotic, and hearing of her son's illness she goes a little overboard, so Adam choses to avoid her at all cost. `50/50' is very much a story of one man coming to terms with fate and in the process placing those he loves in proper perspective. To avoid the ignorance of a few reviewers here, I'll point out that everyone deals with situations in different ways. To say that the mother and or the friend are clichéd examples of unrealities is presumptuous and arrogant. In fact, I found the characterization of most of the main characters to be spot on. Adam's calmly coated frustrations are appropriately uncomfortable, and his sideways glances and internalized fears are brilliantly conveyed (Joseph Gordon-Levitt is truly one of the best of his generation). The character of Kyle is honest, using a defense mechanism in order to combat the fear of losing his best friend, and most likely his favorite person. Diane, the grieving mother, reminds me so much of my own mother that I was brought to tears (that scene where she tells her son about the support group was beautifully acted). The film's only real misstep is in the character of Katherine. Her characterization was in bad taste and it really took away from the whole film. The way she was as a therapist was bad enough (her inexperience and unprofessional nature was unbelievable and irritating) but the obvious love interest spin on her character was just preposterous and ridiculous. It took away from the honest direction the film was taking. THIS ISN'T SUPPOSED TO BE A ROMANTIC COMEDY. That said, Gordon-Levitt, Rogen and Huston are astonishingly good here, and who knew that Ron Howard could produce a landmark in modern beauty like Bryce Dallas Howard (WHAT A FOX). `50/50' isn't perfect, but it is very good. I really love this movie. I’m a huge fan of JGL and Seth Rogen, and I love all the films I’ve seen them in — but I think this is my favorite movie that either actor has ever had a role in. The fact that it’s based on the screenwriter’s personal experience with cancer? Even more brilliant. Watch this movie, swear to god you won’t regret it. 10/10 Read more
