Within minutes of mounting my spotting scope for the first time on this tripod, I promptly benefited from the quick release plate safety switch. I had tilted the mount forward without the plate lock knob engaged. The scope slid downward on the plate and was stopped at the precipice by the safety switch. The switch sets itself when the plate is slid into position from either side of the platform, so there was no risk of anything hitting the floor. But it was startling and a good reminder that a quality tripod comes with a good number of buttons and knobs—and they all do something important. At a glance, a fluid head tripod has the appearance of a standard, two axes horizontal/vertical tripod. And at a closer look it is somewhat akin to a ball head tripod mount. In fact, it’s an improved hybrid of both—the major difference being the fluid head uses the flow of fluid rather than the uneven resistance of solid friction to more-smoothly control the drag of panning. Ball heads provide faster and simpler rotation of the camera angle than a standard tripod head but are less suited for supporting heavier equipment and do not offer the same stability and level of controlled, smooth movement of a fluid head. Another advantage is that fluid heads eliminate the possibility of an unsecured camera tilting suddenly off center if the operator loses his grip on the handle. With a fluid head, the plate lock knob can balance a camera so that when tilted at a sharp angle it will not suddenly flop forward or backward if the handle is inadvertently released. Instead, the camera will slowly guide itself back into balance. The NIETOTO tripod features a bowl design which allows the entire fluid head assembly the same range of movements as a ball head mount. It is controlled by a head lock knob handle extending downward from the base of the mount. When centered, a bubble level on the bowl ensures that all panning on vertical and horizontal planes will be true, a real advantage for videography and landscape and architectural photography. Structurally, the tripod is rock solid. The length of the tubular aluminum, three-section, double row legs is set by sturdy, flip locks. A push or pull on the center spreader plate sets the base width of the legs. Three-inch diameter, non-slip rubber feet are ideal for level surfaces but can be removed to expose a pair of metal spikes on each leg for rough terrain. Other conveniences include 3/8- and 1/4-inch mounting screws on the quick release plate and a 3/8-inch threaded connector on the side of the head for attaching a microphone, light or other accessory. A carrying bag with a handle, adjustable-length shoulder strap and zippered compartment is provided, along with eight, L-shaped hex wrenches, an instruction sheet, 12-month warranty and 30-day money back guarantee. As an artist, learning photography is just part of the job. Needing good images for sharing and or printing, but not needing professional level gear...puts me in a strange hobbyist pro type level maybe? And as such...have tried lots of gear over the years, but always closer to the entry level end than pro...for about 30 years now. So..my take: I really, really like this trip. I kept looking at it for the approachable price...but I have not had a lot of luck getting the cheapest available option so far. This tripod seems to be a nice change of pace in that regard. Is it the best tripod you will ever use? Probably not. Especially if you are ever around pro gear. But is this an extremely nice option for someone like me, or a hobbyist, or social media production? Absolutely. This is an amazing tripod for the independent single person studio, or the hobbyist who just wants to step up the quality of their video. The cons first: There is a fair bit of plastic here. But I will say that it does seem to maybe be some form of composite, as it is hard and resists scratching well. This is ideal for the in home studio, but I wouldn't want to drag it outside too many times. You will be fine on that rare occasion...but if you regularly work outdoors...I dunno, the legs feel like there are just too many stress points to break down and set up over and over, much less expose to the elements consistently. So YouTubers yes, wildlifers no. The leg designs, will interesting and definitely give it character and heft...are also needlessly overcomplicated...and having so many stress points will eventually inevitably lead to failure. But...that being said, I got this for my studio, I doubt it will ever see the outside, and only rarely get adjusted for height. The flaps that lock the legs just don't feel like there is enough tension to last a lot of rounds of opening/closing. They will give out. But I do almost all my work in one workbench area. so that won't be an issue for me, or someone who doesn't talking head videos, etc. Pros: I absolutely did not expect the fluid head to be so fluid. I have had about a dozen over the years, and the lover the price, the more jerky the movement. Again, this bucks that trend. I took lots of sample movement and tracking videos for about an hour with my dog, and they looked fantastic. I do happen to do a lot of wildlife, and this fluid head would actually be great for that...on a different leg system. I love the ability to add attachments already built in, and makes a great spot for my mic, as I don't like having it too close to my lens with some of my older, louder lenses. I set it up with a full right with two side handles, top bar, and 5.5" field monitor with hood and battery, and it didn't seem to affect the motion action at all. Only a barely noticeable drift at angles working against the weight. pretty impressive really. The long handle is a dream. it allows for the tiniest adjustments with so little initial lunge. Overall I am very, very happy. Yes, it does show its budget mindedness in areas...but as I mentioned, someone like me working mostly inside in one location...will not rub up against those issues any time soon. This is by far the most bang for the buck in the price range I have gotten in awhile, and I not only would get again, but recommend to my friends as well. Read more
