This controller brings modern ergonomics my childhood favorite system. Being able to have access to all buttons and have an extra Z button helps a lot when playing games. I would also give praise to the thumbstick on the 8BitDo controller! I have always struggled with the original N64 thumbsticks wearing out, and compared to other thumbstick replacements, the 8BitDo controller stands out feeling smooth with a decent dead zone. If you like Bluetooth version after firmware update/calibration, this controller is awesome. Low latency, as low as you can get. The stick is still not as good as an NSO N64 from Nintendo. But it’s a close second. If you do prefer NSO 8BitDo’s Retro Receiver (Bluetooth) is also very good. Read more
So far, it's the best N64 controller I ever had. The D-pad is responsive (although diagonal inputs might be a little stiff) and the control stick seems to be working perfectly. Every button on the controller seems to be sensitive enough. It's not perfect though. The controller is not compatible with Switch so far, and it needs to be wired when connected to the PC which may or may not affect the battery life since it tends to charge whenever it is plugged into something. You're also going to need to get creative if you want to transfer save files since they're stored in the dongle which has no port to connect to a PC for backing the files up. Rumble does work on Nintendo's official N64, but only after you update it with 8BitDo's Ultimate Software which I believe you will need a PC with a 64-bit operating system to use. I don't know about Mac compatibility. Other than that, this is a solid choice for playing on a Nintendo 64. Read more

Plug and Play, N64 action right out of the box. 8BitDo delivers another pure fantastic controller experience. Now I have always loved the original N64 controller, in fact I think it's one of the greatest made controllers of all time, with multiple styles built into one unit that I lot of people just never truly understood. But I also don't mind trying out another variety just for the sake of change. Right off the bat, this pad straight up feels and looks like an N64 controller, just with a more Sega/Xbox control grip. The buttons are large and feel just like you remember on the Nintendo original, same with the d-pad too. They throw in the Switch buttons as well if you want to use this controller there too. Now where the biggest change happens is the joystick. Which still feels like the N64 version. Just with modern improvements. Even as a 90s gaming veteran, I kid you not, this joystick made me more precise in all the N64 games I was playing. Especially FPS games like GoldenEye, Turok, and Perfect Dark. I was actually way beyond impressed on how well I could aim with the new stick. Yet it didn't feel like I was trading off from my N64 feel. The only somewhat odd thing and it's only just because how the N64 original controller was laid out, is the shoulder buttons. These here are like PlayStations, but with two Z buttons, so you can choose which side you like. I think only because I'm used to how an Xbox layout is or Switch for that matter that you do have to get used to a little different aiming style. Like with Body Harvest, I was using R1 to aim and R2 to fire. I guess I could also use L2 to fire but that might feel a little more like left handed controls. I got used to it and it feels comfortable at least. Plus, the shoulder buttons do feel like the N64 buttons. There may be a way to use the 8BitDo software to switch around the button layout but realistically, I would probably just leave them as is. And for the good majority of games, it's not ever a problem. The other major thing I loved about this version that I thought was missing on the initial 8BitDo N64 controller. Which I bought that white version. Is that they made the controller scheme N64 style and it looks fantastic and not bland like the plain black and white ones. But it also comes with the N64 original system controller adapter. Which really should have been there with the original ones. I tried out another off-brand adapter and that loaded up the button scheme wrong. Where 8BitDos official one here is just plug and play and ret to go. And also it's at about the same price as those first versions where too. All killer, no filler here. I love everything about this controller and it really breaths some new life into my always out and ready, original N64 controller. Being able to use it on the Switch 2 or PC is just a total bonus. And technically that's what I'll use the white one for. But do yourself a favor and add this to the collection. You'll be glad you did. Read more
