I have been relying on a standard automatic drip machine for years, but recently, the coffee just felt flat and uninspired. I wanted to recapture that rich, heavy-bodied texture I usually only get at my local café, so I decided it was time to switch to a manual brewing method. This specific AdHoc French Press Coffee Maker immediately got my attention because of its incredibly clean, modern aesthetic - it does not look like a clunky piece of camping gear, but rather like a piece of modern art designed for the kitchen counter. Plus, AdHoc always delivered excellent product experience so far, so it was a safe bet for me. Upon unboxing, the first thing I noticed was the elegant construction. It is made entirely of tinted borosilicate glass, which gives it a very pure, laboratory-chic vibe that fits perfectly in a modern home. The main selling point here is the stainless steel microfilter and the promise of a smooth plunging system. My first attempt was an experiment in patience and aroma. I heated my water, added my coarse grounds, and let it steep for about four minutes. The plunging action was surprisingly fluid. Unlike other presses I have used in the past where you have to physically fight the rod down, this one glided efficiently through the water. The resulting cup was fantastic, possessing that signature oily richness without the muddy sediment that usually ruins the last sip of a French press brew. The spout is also exceptionally well-designed, offering a clean pour without any annoying dribbles running down the side of the carafe. However, the experience is not entirely perfect. While the unit looks stunning, the glass walls feel somewhat thin, making me a bit nervous about clanking it against the granite countertop or the sink faucet during cleanup. I find myself treating it with extreme caution. Also, I was a little disappointed to find the lid is actually made of some sort of rubberied plastic. It works fine and seals heat perfectly, but it feels slightly less premium compared to the rest of the construction. Additionally, there were no printed instructions in the box, which might be confusing for a total novice who needs guidance on ratios. Despite those minor gripes, it cleans up easily in the dishwasher and makes a genuinely delicious, aromatic cup of coffee that starts my day on the right foot. Read more

Setting our drip coffee maker's timer to have six cups ready by our wake-up time is convenient, but...well, the coffee doesn't approach the taste of that at our favorite coffee shops and restaurants. My son-in-law's delight with his French press convinced me to take the plunge, and this AdHoc system seemed the perfect choice. When it arrived, I immediately unboxed and put it to a test, and I confirmed that opinion. I am so impressed with every detail of this coffee maker, from design to production to instructions (via QR code) to performance. I followed the directions, but used the same regular-grind coffee so I could compare it to our drip-coffee maker. Despite not using coarse-ground coffee, I found absolutely no grounds in my two cups of coffee, even near the bottom of the pot above the filter. Amazing! The process was quicker than I'd anticipated (two minutes to heat filtered water in the microwave, a minute to bloom, then five minutes to steep before pressing down on the plunger), and I filled the time with other activities in my morning routine. The taste was similar, but richer, somehow, than that from our drip-coffee system. I'm enthusiastic, now, to test it out with some higher quality coffee and anticipate that I'm going to start enjoying my morning brew a lot more in the days to come. The handle is perfectly-sized, and the pot is large enough for easy clean-up with a sponge or wash cloth, although I know I can just run it through the dishwasher. The lid fits the pot snugly, and the plunger is extraordinarily efficient in compressing the grounds and not allowing grounds up into the coffee. The pour spout doesn't drip or dribble but delivers a neat, steady stream of coffee into my mug. The whole system is trim, attractive, and compact. So nice! I love it. Read more

This is a very nice French press in a streamlined, minimalist, functional style that I prefer, omitting the steel or plastic frame and handle for an all-borosilicate heat-resistant glass body. This might make it a little more fragile in case of “impact,” but the trade-off in simplicity and easier cleaning is fine for me. Also, the smokey gray glass probably hides coffee stains better than the more common clear glass. In addition, the lid is silicone, and the filter is stainless steel with a very fine mesh. But no matter how fine the mesh is, French press coffee always leaves a little too much fine sediment for my preferences. So instead of pouring the coffee straight into my cup, I always pour it through a pourover paper filter, where it leaves an amount of sediment that’s less than other French presses I’ve used. The 600ml capacity is just enough for 2 cups of coffee. But there’s also a 1000ml version of this product. One minor annoyance is that instead of including a small user manual, it provides a slip of paper with a QR code for an online manual. However, the link was broken for me. But I was able to search the internet with the product name and easily find the manual. It’s pretty brief, as you might expect, so if I were the manufacturer, I would just print the instructions right on the outside of the box instead of relying on a URL that can change over time.
