One of the greatest Single-A horror games ever made!
An unholy mix of Silent Hill, P.T., Resident Evil, and meta-horror, Among Ashes is an unforgettable horror experience. Created by a solo developer (Daniel Ferrer), it makes the most of its resources, delivering a survival horror game that is simultaneously creepy, haunting, and deeply unsettling. You play as nameless young man alone in his apartment during the 2001 holidays, spending his time gaming and chatting with friends. One of your AIM contacts, Mark, sends you a link to a retro horror game, and as you start playing, the line between reality and nightmare begins to blur. Strange, terrifying events begin happening in your own apartment, slowly eroding your sense of safety and control. The game excels at building tension. Small, almost imperceptible details, the flicker of lights, eerie sounds, or messages that seem almost personal, creep under your skin. The horror is not just in what you see, but in what you feel, lingering long after you step away from the screen. Among Ashes has stayed with me for nearly a week. Like the protagonist, I find it impossible to shake its presence from my mind. It’s clever, insidious, and immersive in a way few horror games manage to be. The ending, when it comes, is shocking and haunting, an experience that stays with you and forces reflection long after the credits roll. The game is a slow, creeping descent into unease and dread, executed with remarkable skill by a single developer. For anyone drawn to psychological horror that sticks, Among Ashes is worth experiencing. Read more
