Aqasonic Speaker 339

Robert M. AisenbergSeptember 18, 2005

The speaker is about 11 inches diameter and consists of a lens-shaped magnet joined to a second sound radiator by a short length of threaded metal. The unit can be used in 3 configurations 1-in the underwater light housing 2-all underwater held by a rope 3-floating with magnet below water and radiator above. I use configuration 2, since I want to control the overwater(air) sound volume independently. This can be done by using a second speaker or by pulling on the rope to vary the amount of the speaker above the water. Bass is better when the speaker is a little deeper, though. I pull the speaker out of the water when I put the pool cover on. To hear it your ears have to be in or just above the water. If you are near the side of the pool where the speaker is, you can also hear reflections from the edge of the pool. This is a mono speaker. I am using one channel of a sony 85 watt receiver with a Y-connector from the CD to one input and the balance set all to that side. I have the volume almost all the way up. The sound volume is not very high except within about a 6 foot radius of the speaker. The bass is very good in that radius, however. A second speaker would surely be better, but I wasn't ready to spend that much on this project. I'm using about 40 ft of cable. I did not buy waterproff cable from the company at $1.50/ft but am using Zip-cord with outdoor silicon-filled wire nuts from home depot for $2. Sound quality is fair. Its ok for the ballgame while I'm swimming laps. Music is fair; tinny sounding when you're more than 10 ft from the speaker. I have a 20x40 ft pool and hang the speaker in the middle of the long side so I'm away from the speaker a lot. Turning the treble all the way down helps a little. You would not confuse this with an average home stereo sound. If you just want to listen to music and swim laps, the finas swiMp3 is a personal mp3 player that might have better sound and be more cost effective. Despite its shortcomings,I've enjoyed this item anyway. Read more
