Excellent purchase, works great

Easy set up. Cools well, a little noisy but not intolerable. The automatic opening door is a little strange, not sure how it will hold up over time. The oscillation of the door does help circulate the cool air, the cool air will naturally tend to go downward from the ceiling area. To be fair, it opens about 3/4 of the way, so it never points directly up at the ceiling. All the window parts fit perfectly, little adjustment needed. Read more

Works well in an apartment bedroom.

Washington state just had record high temperatures. Luckily I got this in right before it struck. The first night I set it up in the living room on the sliding door. I just cut up the box and taped it up in the sliding screen to form a wall and cut out a square in the bottom for the vent slat. I closed off the doors and turned on the AC. It started tripping the breaker pretty often throughout the night. I was worried about my purchase. It just wasn’t powerful enough to cool the whole central part of the apartment. The next morning I put it in the bedroom into a sliding window. I created a wall with the cardboard again. It cools the room well. It has tripped the breaker a time or two but not like it was in the living room. I did some reading and this can be prevented by turning the unit off periodically. I shut it off for a 12 hour window at one point, which was hot and miserable, but it allowed the unit to rest. So now I turn it off throughout the day to give it rest. Overall I enjoy the AC but it’s only good for a bedroom in my opinion. If you’re trying to cool a larger area, get a bigger unit. Read more

Saved us when our home HVAC went out.

We have a 1000 sq/ft master bedroom and bathroom combo. We had a smaller portable AC that just couldn't keep up so we splurged for this one. Our home HVAC was out so we needed something that would last a couple weeks. We didn't care about noise, energy level or anything else. Just a big AC unit that could cool our space and this delivered. I am close to 3 stars on this one as I feel there is an opportunity to send better plastic window panels. Our older unit came with far better options on this, and the enclosed materials didn't fully fit our window. We had to cobble something together so the vent could go out our window. Don't get me wrong, the AC unit itself is amazing. iT's powerful and cools well. I think Black and Decker got too cheap with the window panels that made the whole unit far less helpful. Read more

Life Saver!

My son moved back home and into the loft upstairs. The room is huge! But it was as HOT! We didn't feel like spending $7K for a new A/C unit since it still works just not as well, so I bought this for the loft. It's amazing! The room is now cold and it's quiet and it looks great from outside. Just a small exhaust. Done and did! Wish we could do our entire home this way. Haha! I was really worried it would appear like a window unit from the outside but no it does not. Included a photo from outside because it's not obvious at all. Read more

It’s hot and humid as it gets, works pretty well.

Works pretty well but confusing as the dehumidifier mode puts out colder air than the air conditioning mode. Tried to call the manufacturer to see if I was using it correctly and left a message but never got a call in return. Air conditioning mode also collect more water than the dehumidifier which should be the opposite. Maybe it’s me but…It’s hot and humid as it gets, works pretty well. Otherwise not very noisy and the electric bill did not go up very much. Read more

So many issues with this unit! Look for another.

I’ve owned portable AC’s before. And I bought 2 nee units. This one and the Whynter Elite ARC-122DS 12,000. This Black + Decker unit is terrible! First it was delivered and you’re suppose to let the unit set for 24+ hours to let the coolant settle, etc (per instructions). Being heavy, I moved it into the entry way with hard floor inside my door to let it set. When I went to inbox it and set it up, the whole box bottom was soaking wet and no longer a box bottom from complete liquid saturation. (The box lifts off the top of the unit and the bottom is separate. There’s a huge thick layer of styrofoam at the top and bottom of the unit between it and the cardboard box. But yet somehow, so much liquid leaked with it in upright position that it went around or through it to the bottom. This didn’t make me very confident that coolant was massively leaking without even opening or turning it on. Second, I was sent the wrong pieces for the window kit. The 3 pieces are suppose to fit together (as shown in 2 different spots in the directions and matching the window width and height it accommodates if you use all 3 together. They are suppose to fit as shown with the exhaust hole at the bottom if you use them upright.). I was sent the wrong combination of inner and outer pieces for the panels to slide together. So the exhaust opening has to be in the middle-ish of the window and not the bottom, Which also uses more hose length to reach the unit, limiting the little amount the unit can be moved. Third, all of the connector pieces to the hose ends and unit (which is double my other unit because they made many small pieces to put together instead of fewer connector pieces) do not stay put and lock in place well. So many times when setting up, the pieces would I connect when I clicked something else in place and the pieces would fall apart. Fourth, this unit is much louder than my other one. I installed it in our living room and I can’t imagine how loud we will have to turn the tv up to watch it while the AC is on. That’s gonna be an issue. Fifth, the opening on top opens automatically, which is a nice feature, but opens so far that the air literally blows nearly straight up to the ceiling. I can adjust it moving it by hand to blow outward/forward more. However, manually moving pieces that are on electronic fu croons like that can sometimes mess up the electronic functioning. And there’s no way to open it manually completely. And also, closing it some so it doesn’t point to the ceiling, covers some of the fan/air, allowing less to blow out. Now for the good... 1st, if you get the right pieces, (which I didn’t) the window kit is pretty good. It has foam dealers and all, which my other did not come with. However, I can’t speak to how easy they are to install or the effectiveness because I have not installed them yet, not knowing if I am going to keep the unit yet. 2nd, it came with a drain hose, my Other did not. But in the skeem of things, a drain hose and foam strips to seal it better, cost very little. And I’d rather have to purchase them and have a better AC unit with no issues. Still, nice to have included. 3rd, it seems to have a powerful fan. I already regret the purchase of this unit. And I’m about to buy a 3rd unit for the upstairs of my house. I will NOT be buying this one again OR any Black + Decker unit. I will stick with another of the other I purchased for sure! Read more

Works great! Perfect for hurricane preparedness

We purchased this unit primarily for use during power outages from hurricanes. We have used it maybe 5 or 6 times now and it works very well. We have a large master bedroom (16x30) with 16 ft vaulted ceilings. It cools this room to a comfortable 72-74 within an hour or two. It's a bit noisy for sleeping, but there isn't much you can do about that in this market of machines. Read more
