I looked long and hard for the right floss: - Compostable. - Made sustainably (good for the environment). - Vegan (silk worms are killed to make most silk). - Effective This one checks all the boxes except that, depending on where you live, it is imported, which incurs the cost and impact of transportation. I couldn't find anything that checks more boxes. It's more effective and gentle, in my experience, than other flosses I've tried. Teflon and wax reduce the cleaning effectiveness compared with a natural fibre like this one. I often shred floss, but this one does not shred on me. If I use it multiple times it will snap, but it is good for more than a couple of goes. I've shown it to other people who have adopted it too. My dental hygienist was impressed with it too and has it on display for people who care to choose based on the criteria I mentioned. The packaging is great too. There's a glass vial version and you can get refills without re-buying the glass. The packaging is paper and no plastic. Watch out for storing glass vials on the top shelves of bathroom cabinets where they can easily be accidentally nudged to a fall. This glass vial will break relatively easily. Read more

I love this floss. I was devastated when J&J discontinued their Listerine/Reach Gentle Gum Care floss and have been searching for a suitable replacement for years now. THIS IS IT. You do need to either (1) get one of the dispensers from this company, or (2) be comfortable using scissors to cut your floss. This pack of six floss bundles is a refill and doesn’t include the dispenser. I got this floss in coconut, and while there’s no flavor, the scent is perfect — vivid enough to be enjoyable without being overpowering. The texture is superb. Because it’s made of bamboo fibers, the floss is silky and soft yet also very strong. It doesn’t break or fray between tight teeth. It also has enough texture to really scrub the surface between your teeth without feeling like you’re using an old rope from a boat (I can’t stand those flosses!). Best of all, because it is silky and soft, it’s actually gentle on the gums. The black color of the floss is really interesting. I was skeptical at first, but it really does show you all the crud you’re removing, which makes daily flossing feel more accomplishing. This floss is also a REALLY good deal for the price, and it’s biodegradable. This is a fantastic floss, and I will use it forever, for as long as they make it! Read more

This is dental floss. I tried it because I could not stand seeing all the non-recyclable plastic waste being generated from other dental floss products and especially those tiny bits of floss on plastic picks that are becoming more popular- they are disgusting. But just being sustainable and biodegradable isn't enough for me. I try to do my part to use less plastic whenever possible but I won't accept low quality in exchange. This replaces Dr Tungs and Cocofloss both of which I liked but eventually I got tired of the big plastic containers each roll came in (and are also very expensive here). There is zero plastic in this Boonboo and I really like the black color because it makes it easy to see how much cleaning these are actually accomplishing (a bit yucky but fascinating nonetheless). Very mild flavor hardly noticeable. Natural fibers provide scrubby texture recommended by dentists for proper cleaning unlike those plastic flat flosses which will never decompose for 10,000 years and don't really clean anyway. Thin yet strong enough I had no problems with it breaking while using. Recommended. Read more

I was looking for a biodegradable floss that I wouldn't feel guilty about using and throwing away (I also discovered that some plastic floss uses PFOAS to make them glide, and that's a chemical I definitely don't want to be rubbing on my gums daily). This four pack of "bamboo" floss in the recyclable cardboard box seemed like a good value and good on the planet. By "bamboo" they seem to mean a rayon fiber that is derived from bamboo, and although it still requires a chemical process to produce, I consider this fiber to be more environmentally friendly than plastic because it can biodegrade without producing microplastics. The spools are small, but I discovered that they fit perfectly in most old plastic floss boxes, the kind that usually have a round plastic spool. I modified the boxes by removing the old spool of plastic floss and cutting the old spool holder to allow these new elongated spools of black floss sit at an angle, and then you can use the box and cutter just like with the old floss: reduce, reuse, no need to buy a separate new holder! The floss itself works well and doesn't shred easily, so I find I can use it a few times even for my tight teeth. It does seem like the wax comes off this floss and it starts to shred a bit faster than regular plastic floss, but I don't mind since I wanted something that I could change out more often and have it not turn to microplastics. I chose the flavorless option, and there is no taste at all! Great for those of us who don't like mint. Read more
