I've bought 4 of these so far. They work great, IF you know how to adjust and lock/unlock the fine adjustment crank. properly. Every time I've loaned this stand out to another tech, they bring it back with the crank no longer working correctly. This is because they tighten the thumb screw, which locks the telescoping pole in place and then proceed to turn the crank as hard as they can to adjust the height. This causes the teeth on the plastic gear inside the assembly to be stripped. When the crank is turned clockwise or counterclockwise from that point, it does not adjust the pole. The proper procedure is to loosen the thumb screw, adjust the crank, then "lightly" retighten the thumb screw. Unfortunately, you only get one chance to do it wrong. Purchasing a replacement gear does not seem to be an option. So, you can either purchase a brand new tripod or manually pull up or push down on the entire pole while turning the crank to "help" it make the adjustment. Also, there is a removable adaptor mount on the top of the tripod that can be screwed into your laser or camera. It is a 1/4-20 screw. If you are switching out different devices on this tripod often, I would recommend removing the adaptor mount altogether, drilling a hole through the top of the underlying plastic base and purchasing several 1/4-20 thumb screws (one to keep with each of your mountable devices).
