Why would I buy another recording of the Brahms symphonies, when I already have excellent ones by Klemperer, Monteux, Haitink, and Boult? Aside from the fun of a visual representation, this set has a first-rate orchestra, with a full, warm sound, impeccable technique, and especially fine woodwind players, who make the most of the many solo passages. Then there is an excellent conductor. Bychkov is unusual among Russian conductors in having a real affinity for Brahms, but his discography displays considerable versatility in moving beyond the expected Russian repertoire. His Brahms is well-structured and heartfelt, with effectively flexible tempos and a wonderfully clear texture. And all the repeats are observed! The sound is excellent, and the visual production is fine, though the quick cuts from one section to another is sometimes distracting. The opening and closing sequence, with a steadicam passing through the lobby and into the hall, then back out to the street, is just silly; but it can easily be skipped. As with Bychkov's Rachmaninov set with the same orchestra, this one is thoroughly recommendable. Read more

This is a very recommendable re-coupling of Brahms' four symphonies. This review is based on the original Arthaus issues of the 4 symphonies on two discs. This Kultur issue comes from the same masters so it should play the same but I cannot guarantee this. Even though recorded on stage in full concert dress the performances are done without audience - rather as a studio recording. There is a strong sense of long takes however, and of real performances taking place before our eyes. Bychkov has a real understanding of the Brahms sound world and overall structure. Pace is maintained well and climaxes are built convincingly, without exaggeration and excitingly. Orchestral textures are reinforced with a strong bass foundation supplied by the fine string section. The sound is presented in excellent surround format as well as stereo. The camera work is mostly very sympathetic although there is a tendency towards camera hyperactivity at climax points where the camera shots hop quickly from one instrument to another to show answering phrases. I find this to be distracting rather than adding to excitement although others may not find this a problem. The actual imaging is nicely sharp and texturally very good. I would suggest that at the moment this is arguably the best option on the market and represents outstanding value. I am aware though that there are other opinions about this! However in my personal judgement, it seems that 5 stars would be a fair assessment for what seems to me to be a fine achievement and one which most purchasers should be very happy with it as performances and as a recording.
