The lid seals enough for the butter to stay fresh, but not tight enough that the dish can be picked up by just the lid if you don't have a good grip on it. It's not the same square shape that's shown in the picture. This one flares out towards the top-which doesn't change the functionality-but it's not being represented honestly.
