*Trouble releasing the pump?* Read here!....unscrew the entire pump from the bottle and pull pump out of bottle completely. With one hand, hold the very top piece and turn it counterclockwise while firmly holding the bottom of the pump with your other hand. It'll be slippery, so I suggest wrapping a tissue or paper towel around the bottom part for some grip. It should pop up after a couple turns. As someone who usually imports all of their skincare products from Korea -and, only purchases the very best luxury haircare- I was actually surprised that I've never thought to purchase anything besides regular drugstore feminine wash before. I honestly didn't even know there were other (better) options for feminine hygiene products until now. This Damask Rose Wash has absolutely leveled up my bathing routine in the best way possible. I don't think I can ever go back to what I was using before. Everything from the packaging to the lathering is exquisite. The bottle itself is even so lovely that it actually enhances my bathroom decor, which usually isn't the case with any sort of consumable products. I like my spaces to give an Air B&B/hotel feel as much as possible, so I tend to hide my product bottles out of sight; however, this has earned a visible place in my bathroom. The pump is also convenient, as opposed to the flip top/squeeze that many similar products are packaged in. The pump tube also goes completely to the bottom, so I won't have to worry about wasted product near the end. The product itself lathers very well, and feels very silky. While the instructions state 1-2 pumps, I found it concentrated enough that one pump is more than enough to completely cleanse and remove any odors. My only critique would be the scent. I actually found it to smell a tad bleachy, which I'm not a fan of; however, this is a natural and vegan product without any unnecessary chemicals, so that's very understandable for it to not have any added artificial scents. This CAELA Lacto Damask Rose Wash Gel is made with a Lactobacillus-derived ingredient meant to promote a healthy skin microbiome, gently scented with natural damask rose fragrance. This is a high-end product intended to be gentle on sensitive skin. Why would they put Lactobacillus in soap? I had to look it up. Apparently, Lactobacillus is the hot new ingredient in body washes, intended to strengthen the natural skin barrier to moisturize and protect the skin. When I tried it, it did indeed seem to exfoliate dead skin cells and leave my skin feeling noticeably softer and smoother. The effect was especially noticeable on my face. My cheeks felt as smooth as a baby’s! I also learned the difference between shower gels and body washes. Apparently, shower gels are made of harsher ingredients designed to more effectively remove dirt and grease. They tend to be cheaper, to produce more lather, and to have a stronger smell. Body washes have gentler ingredients meant to moisturize skin--although they are also effective at removing dirt. They usually produce little lather and have much more subtle scents. This product is the archetype of a body wash. It produces very little lather, so I initially wondered if it was really cleaning my skin. But it totally was! And the rose scent is so very subtle that, frankly, I cannot smell it at all! This body wash has a soap smell with mildly citrusy overtones that reminds me of all-purpose lemon-scented kitchen cleaner. It almost seems as though they waved a damask rose over it so that they could call it damask rose wash gel. (Not too surprising, as natural damask rose essence must be terribly expensive!) One more note: I initially had trouble figuring out how to get the very helpful dispenser pump to work. You have to unscrew the pump nozzle from the plastic piece just beneath it, so that it pops up. Turn it to the left while holding onto the little plastic pedestal beneath it, and you should be good to go! Rose-scented body wash seems to be priced in two distinct brackets, one cheap and the other expensive. Cheap rose-scented body wash can be had for 32 cents (Olay) to $1.30 per ounce. The most common mass-produced varieties like Olay and Dove cost around 35 cents per ounce. Most brands cost about 40 to 60 cents per ounce. The expensive tier of rose-scented body wash costs $2.37 to $4 per ounce, with most being priced around $3 per ounce. At the list price of $19.99 for 6.76 ounces ($2.96 per ounce), this CAELA body wash runs squarely in the middle of that pack. This body wash is a stereotypical body wash at an average price for high-end body washes. It produces little lather, yet softens and moisturizes skin. It is designed to be gentle, for people with sensitive skin. The Lactobacillus-based ingredient is probably what distinguishes it the most. If you want the benefits that Lactobacillus in body wash promises, then you may like this body wash. If you were hoping it would leave you smelling like roses—or indeed, if you expect any rose scent at all—then you will do better to buy a different brand. Read more
