First off, I will say the price is a little steep for what you are getting. I think that the product might make up for the price if they were to lower it a little. If you are like most men, you just want something that won't break your skin out or at least provide a good shave. This does it but I'm not sure if it would be good for the long term due to the price. It is almost like a boutique shaving cream. It's not a gel or a foam. I can't describe it really, but a little bit does go a long way. I don't use a razor on my face to to getting ingrown hair, but I do shave my head. The shaving elixir was great and provided a smooth gliding surface and my head felt really good after. I usually apply a thin sheen of raw coconut oil to help with my scalp after a shave, but I wanted to see if I would need to use that with this elixir, but nope, it has kept my head pretty smooth. As a guy over the years I've typically bought what's cheap when it comes to shaving cream, because I felt like all it had to be was functional enough to get the razor to go over my skin without peeling me like a potato. I'm in my 40s now and skincare is actually something I'm starting to think about (and probably should have a decade ago), so I gave the Caldera + Lab The Smooth a shot even though the price was pretty steep. I figured one bottle couldn't hurt and then I'd go back to my cheap gel when it wasn't much better. Well that plan didn't work, because it IS that much better. Without giving away the product I previously used for years, I'll stay on the Edge of giving away what gel it was and it was my trusty go to, it was cheap and reliable and got the job done without irritating my face. The Smooth from Caldera + Lab is just in another league though. For starters, it's not a cream or a gel, I used 4 pumps of what looked like a cross between a lotion and a serum. Frankly it didn't look like enough to get the job done, when you're coming from using a shave gel with much more volume, but I rubbed it into about 3 days worth of stubble and it was enough to cover my face. When I saw it applied I was convinced that I either needed more or it wouldn't work real well at all. I was wrong on both counts. My razor glided right though it and because it's not a huge foamy mess like a gel or shaving cream, you actually finish shaving quicker. Where you really notice the magic of this product is when you finish and dry your face. The shave I got was just plain and simply better than what I got with my old gel. Like a lot better. The Smooth is exactly what my face felt like. Ok, so is this stuff really pricey? Yes, and that's going to be the difference maker for some and that's fair honestly. Is it better than a $10 can of gel? Yes, by a long shot. The shave I got from this was next level and the only difference was The Smooth. I didn't even change to a new head on my razor to avoid a new blade giving me a better shave and confusing that with the product doing it. This is a very nice shaving elixir. The consistency is different than a shave cream, or a shave gel, and serum does seem to be a good descriptor, and I would describe it as something like a diluted creamy liquid facial soap, closer to a shave gel than a shave cream in its consistency. It goes on smoothly and spreads easily. It is comfortable on the skin and is not drying to my skin period. After shaving with this, my skin feels clean and fresh, and does not feel like I have had a more chemical based shave cream on the skin. It provides good lubrication for the shave, without being excessively slick, noting that some shaving gels makes the area so slick that the blade seems to slide over the hairs without cutting them as effectively, instead this one provides very good lubrication, while still providing a nice shave. I could not appreciate any scent. It is a very nice presentation, with a nice attractive box, and a very attractive, well-made glass bottle with a pump on top. So this would make a nice gift. This is a relatively small bottle, though a relatively small amount of the gel is needed for each shave. I appreciate the better ingredients used. I have attached a couple photos, including the full ingredient list. This is a fairly expensive shave gel, so while I can recommend this product based on its quality, I can only recommend this to those who are comfortable paying up for the quality, as one can certainly get an excellent shave with a less expensive product. Ignoring the cost, this is a very nice shave elixir; it performs well, and feels really nice to shave with. One more point, some shave gels go on clear and it makes it hard to know if you have shaved one area or not because the product is not visible, but this product does lather up nicely, by just rubbing it onto your face by hand, creating a pleasant, foamy lather, allowing one to easily see where you have and have not yet shaved.
