My wife and I have decided for 2016 to focus on our fitness. When I first looked on amazon for dumbbells, I was amazed at how much money you can spend. If you wanted, you could drop 4 figures easy on a set. I didn't think that was appropriate for me, so I went another route. I must've read hundreds of reviews on many different brands before I settled on these. Why did I choose them? 1. Price. Now, there are cheaper ones out there, but based on the reviews I thought these were a fair price for what they were, and I was right. They are easy to hold and well made, and I don't think the price was unreasonable. 2. Options. These come in many different weights. I currently need 3 different weights based on which exercises I do, as not all my muscles are equally strong. Also, my wife is considerably less strong than me, so I needed lighter dumbbells to suit her. Overall I thought the selection was good, and I can move a few sizes up before I run out of options. True, this brand maxes out at 50lbs, but if you can handle more weight than that you're obviously very serious about working out. 3. No smell. I didn't want bare metal as it might damage things, but I was leery about coatings. Now, I am very smell tolerant, and can bathe in gasoline if I wish, and in fact have. However, my wife's sniffer is highly sensitive, so I needed something that would not offend her nasal passages. 4. The actual weight of each dumbbell is reasonably accurate. Using the bathroom scale, they seem to be about 3/10ths of a pound off, in either direction. I find that acceptable. Now, if I were a serious body builder, I'd want something more accurate, but for my purposes they're ok. Overall I think these are a good product at a fair price and I would order them again. I ordered two pairs, one 15 lb and the other 20 lb, and I'm equally happy with both. The construction is sturdy, the encasing rubber is of high quality, and the rubber wrapping around the handle does to some extent improve comfort when lifting the weight. My only minor complaint is that this wrapping is actually on top of the metal handle itself without the benefit of any groove that would have made it flush with the rest of the handle. The pro is that if the wrapping ever wears off and has to be removed, you wont be left with an indenture in the handle that could make it hard to hold. The cons are that depending on how wide your hand is, the juncture between the wrapping and the metal handle makes for an indentation which creates a pressure point that can be uncomfortable after a while. It also makes for a thicker than usual handle bar, which can be an issue if your hands are small (makes it harder to get a full grip on the handle). Read more
Finally...after years of trying to find urethane-covered hexagon dumbbells with polyurethane grip inlays, I found these. Hallelujah! I originally purchased 10 lb and 12 lb hexagon dumbbells with rubber grip inlays back in July 2008 10lb Hex Dumbbell Pair - Rubber Grip Inlay - Chrome Finish . I loved them so much that I wanted to complete my collection with matching 15 lb dumbbells, but if you click on that link, you'll see that they are no longer available (and haven't been for years). So, because I had to have a set of 15 lb dumbbells, I finally broke down this year and settled on a different set: Neoprene dumbbells set of 1-pair: 15 lbs (30 lbs total) - ²DABMZ . However, I never liked this new set (I found them very uncomfortable to hold because the grip is too large for average adult female hands, and I even have larger than average hands for a woman), so I kept searching EVERYWHERE online for urethane-covered dumbbells with rubber grip inlays. FINALLY, after literally years of searching, these Cap Barbells became available through Amazon. They are a different brand than the ones I purchased in 2008, but the features are nearly identical. So, I gave away the ones I purchased earlier this year, and purchased these as replacements. Yes, it was worth $40 for me to switch (back) to this style of dumbbell :-) Upon receipt of these dumbbells (which arrived in 1 day, I might add), I was pleased to find that they are just as comfortable to use as the dumbbells I purchased in 2008. It is not only the rubber inlays that add to the comfort of the grips (although that IS the best part), but also the shape and size them. I just love them. Great price (and free shipping) too!!! Limited space available on board. This was the perfect solution. With a Little creativity you can exercise all upper body muscles with a set of these. 25 lb is a good weight for adult male. Excellent quality! Would have given them five stars but the inferior shipping boxes had been broken open during transport, allowing minimal damage. Read more
I've a set of Soloflex dumbbells and bench, which are modular, so I can assemble any weight. Have been using them for the last 15 years. But I've found it quite inconvenient for different exercises to change the weight each time. So recently I've purchased a set of CAP Barbells in 15, 20 25 LB sizes. I like how easy it's to switch between the different weights using this method. They are well made, well balanced and it's a pleasure using them. I still use the SOLOFLEX with additional plates for some fixed training, like squats and shoulder rows. Again great weights and I'm considering buying more of their plates as well. This company makes good products that are relatively affordable. Although I've a free Gym membership, I do not like going to the gym, unless I've an injury or after operation, and need to use a variety of equipment in succession. This is why I've a set of weights at home to use any time I feel like, mostly late evening. Read more
