I would not use it to chop bones. It is fine to wash by hand - I never wash my knives in the dishwasher; the blades become dull with time. If you are looking for a knife to wash in the dishwasher, then you should buy the cheapest knife you find; you will throw it out after a while and not feel bad. The blade is sharp. The ergonomic handle feels good even when wet. but the grip is not as good if your hands have oil in them. The knife is actually pretty good quality and has a nice feel when working with it. If course the main reason I got this was for the engraving and good looking gift box which hit the mark on both. The blade cover is great to have and I am sure it will help prevent knicks and dulling when kept in the drawer.
