Excellent shirt for deep sea fishing!

Geek ManJuly 24, 2025

I've always been a Columbia fan, so picked this up for a deep sea fishing expedition I was going on down off the Florida keys. It did a great job of keeping me both cool and protected from the sun. Our first mate was wearing a different brand, but he also was wearing a gaiter that he could pull up over his face and ears to help get protection from the sun. When the UV index goes up to 11, the chance of skin damage is real! The material is quick drying and breathable, and seemed to actually be cooler than if I was shirtless. It kept me from getting a burn after being on the open ocean south of the Keys for 8 hours on the back of a boat, and that's exactly what this shirt is made for. Oh, and the thumb holes on the sleeves also helped keep my backs of my hands covered too. Apparently a lot of people get skin cancer on the back now their hands... Read more

Purchased for fisherman husband. He loves this. I can barely get it washed and he's wearing it again; it's just his favorite. No complaints here! Thanks for a yet another great-looking, comfortable and quality product, Columbia! Read more

Good for what it is, but beware, it doesnt cool you off very well.

Francis C.January 21, 2015

The Good: This hoodie is awesome for what it is. A FISHING HOODIE. (PFG = Performance Fishing Gear). For a day on the river or the ocean, it blocks the sun perfectly, is made up of a very lightweight and breathable material that dries pretty quick. I've worn it on the rivers of South America and its held up GREAT. The Bad: This shirt is NOT as breathable and "cooling" as many other long sleeve options out there. It's great on the water, or with a good breeze. But in high humidity, high heat, less breezy climates, you will find yourself getting a little sweaty and warm. There are other, much better wicking fabrics available that really do an incredible job of "keeping you cool in the sun", but this one only gets so-so marks in that category. For warm, sweaty climates without a breeze, I highly recommend the "ExOfficio Men's Exo Dri Crew Long Sleeve Shirt, AISN B002FU6WEG" instead of the Columbia PFG. Sun protection is a little less, (20 vs 50), however in practical use I've NEVER been burned wearing it. Only problem is that ExOfficio only makes the hoodie version of this shirt in small, limited seasonal runs. So if you're lucky enough to find one, get it quick while you can! I only have the long sleeve version, and I still always prefer it to the Columbia when I'm working outdoors in the South American sun, even if i have to tie an extra t-shirt around my head for head/neck sun protection. The Columbia gets pulled out only for river/ocean use. A note about the SIZING: Like many reviewers have mentioned previously, these run a size larger than average. I wear a medium to large t-short, and this Columbia hoodie in a Small fits me a little loose. Read more

Excellent SPF protection

Eric RoseAugust 26, 2024

I'm a big fan of these SPF 50 shirts. This one is nice because it has the neck gaiter AND the hood. I could have gone with less bling with the fishing logo, but I'm happy to have a bright shirt in case the coast guard has to fish me out of the water some day. One thing to keep in mind with the face gaiter: If you decide to use it over your nose for face protection, it will most likely wipe off any sunscreen you applied to your nose and cheeks. At that point, you are now committed to using the face gaiter instead of sunscreen. I also like wearing this shirt around the water when you are only going to be in direct sunshine for a few minutes, and therefore don't want to use up sunscreen for just a few minutes of protection. In those cases this shirt works great. Like I said, big fan and I wear mine a lot all summer. Read more

UPF 50

TimothyJune 5, 2022

I love that it’s UPF50. The size runs a bit bigger, which is fine with me. Normally wear medium shirts, the small fits perfect. I hate when long sleeve shirts don’t come down to my wrist when my arms are stretched out. Not with these shirts! With my arms out, it still comes up to my wrist. So order down a size. Some reviews say they got burnt in the sun. I am not sure how so. I hate wearing sunblock, I just can’t stand chemicals. 4 hours in the sun kayak fishing, and barley any signs of being sunburned. It works and works pretty well. UPF50 blocks out 98% of the sun’s radiation. I have 12 of these shirts all different colors of course. I am very happy. Columbia, if you read this, make shirts without logos of any kind and I wouldn’t hesitate on buy them for daily wear. Read more

Very nice shirt for hiking

CustomerMay 28, 2024

My boyfriend has a shirt very similar to this one. He loves that shirt. It's also a Columbia. I bought this one because I thought it was the same material but it is not. We cannot find the other one. It is a nice shirt, and will be his favorite at this time, but I am still trying to find the other one (also has a buff attached, and fabric is shiny and reflects the heat). This shirt has buff included which is great for being in the sun all day hiing. Read more

Not just for fishing

QuentinApril 20, 2025

I'm not a fisherman but I wear this shirt for all of my outdoor activities including hiking, cycling, boating, or any other time I need a little extra protection from the sun. It keeps me comfortable whether the temperature is 60 degrees or 90 degrees. I liked it so much I bought a second one in another color. There are a couple minor cons. First, when my sleeves are pulled down the material activates the screen on my smart watch which can cause it to switch apps or mess with my workout, etc. Second, I don't understand why they size these shirts a full size too big. Columbia usually runs a bit loose, but unless you intend to use this as a parachute I would recommend ordering a size down. I'm 6'1 185lbs and medium fits me with plenty of room to move around. If you're looking for a sun shirt, this is a great option. Read more
