Amazingly good bag 85L is the same as old 65L

First off, if you are wondering, this 85L bag has, for all intents and purposes, the same dimensions as what they used to call the 65L bag. I bought the 65L bag last year and my wife has been jealous ever since. We got this one a few weeks ago and it is pretty much exactly the same, although there have been several small improvements. This is an incredibly well-thought-out suitcase. It's easy to pack, the compartments are great for ski trips and regular trips as well. The split level design makes it easy to organize and also unpack. Also, because only the bottom half is completely rigid, the bag can be cinched to stay compact or expand to whatever amount you pack. I love all the handles on the outside, and so did the cabbies that hefted our suitcases into their different trunks. The new design features a few changes, almost all for the better. The wheels and axles are better. The wheels themselves are like rollerblade wheels, and they are mounted in such a way as to be protected on all sides. The outside compartments are deeper and therefore more usefull. It's still tough to stuff a coat in the big one, but it is closer. The id tag is now concealed and has to be pulled out to be read. Inside, the outer level has two pieces that pivot into place to give the bottom of the bag some stiffness. When not in use the bag can now be collapsed easily into the bottom level, making it easy to stow away. It was actually a little tough to get the pieces into place, but we figured it out. The one negative really comes down to a matter of preference, but on the top level there are now two compartments instead of three. I am able to get my snowboard boots into the middle slot in the old bag, so the new bigger one is not as good, although it might make it easier for even bigger boots. We got the "Tabor" color, which is mostly dark gray with a patch of light gray and some blue accents. Looks great, but all of their bags look great, even the more out-there designs. Read more

well made and very roomy

This bag is great! I bought one for myself and one for my daughter to use on a trip to Morocco. I first purchased the 110L but it was too big for our needs, returned those and went with the 85L bag. It was the perfect size and holds a lot! And, it does not get too heavy, we packed them to the maximum and it was still under airline weight limits. It has straps in multiple areas making lifting at different angles very easy. It has different compartments, a ID pocket and braces the stabilize the bottom and also fold up to make storing it easier because it can be flattened. Very durable and made to last, seems to have very strong wheels that should stand up to the test of time. I researched prior to purchasing (there are several youtube videos on this bag) and took a chance on these bags. Very happy I did. They're great bags and if we need other sizes or new bags in the future I will purchase from Dakine again. Read more

Fairly indestructable with a few inprovements.

The bag has made a few international trips and held up quite well. One of the buckles for the straps broke and found better replacements on Amazon that have screws that attach it to the straps and are sturdier than the originals. One edge has been scoffed and the material worn but not threw to the inner layer. The handle is a key component that seems really decent. Love that it will stand by itself which our old travelpro would not. Also I had reservations about the wheels as they are only single but seem to be able to handle curbs and stairs just fine. Overall at the price we payed $135 I'm impressed. Read more

Good first impressions for ski trips.

monkeychefβ€”December 30, 2025βœ“ Verified purchase

I will revisit this once I actually get a chance to use it but I wanted to put out some info about how this packs and initial thoughts. I bought this primarily because the hard case I generally use isn't great for helmets and larger items. I did a test pack and came out with a great impression. It fit all of my normal items for a week ski trip and wasn't a pain to close up. All of this was under 35lbs - Top outer pocket - ski helmet, gloves, gaiter, two pairs of goggles, some extra space for other thin items. Helmet fits perfectly. Top lower pocket - outer shell, inner jacket, ski pants, backpack for trails. Could probably get one or two more garments in here. My ski boots don't fit (size 11 regular shoe) but kids boots and snowboard boots would easily fit here. Main pocket - 3 sets of base layers (pants and shirts), 6 t shirts, 3 pairs of shorts, sweatpants, 3 sweaters, 7 pairs of socks, 9 pairs of underwear, two toiletry bags, mini message gun. Room to spare for maybe two more sweaters. I've had a dakine boot bag for over 10 years and it has held up great - granted I only carry it on. I was looking at both this and the osprey shuttle but can't justify spending over $200 on a suitcase. At first glance and modest testing the build quality on this suitcase seems very good - the zippers seem thick and robust, the front materials seem thick enough to handle some throwing by baggage handlers, and the "base" flaps in the outer bottom pocket are more robust than I expected to keep the bag in its shape as well as provide some protection for items placed in that pocket. The bag stayed upright easily with my test pack. All of the handles felt strong and we're in convenient locations to grab from - I swung the bag around from all of the handles and it gave me some confidence that it could be handled roughly. The handle easily and re/de-tracts when fully loaded - I like that it has 3 heights and fully retracts into the bag so there's less of a chance of damage. The buckles are also a great feature that take some strain off of the main zipper and they seemed to have good seams and are of high quality. TLDR: positive first impressions for someone primarily using this for multiday skintrips. Read more
