Great hardware but firmware crippled

I am very impressed with both the hardware and software. The unit works very well and the two USB ports should be capable of delivering quite a bit of power as the power supply can be up to 5 amp. Unfortunately the software design is made so that a computer always is assigned *all* devices connected to one (or both) of the two ports. So if you connect a USB hub to a port, all those devices will be assigned. So effectively only two users can share devices at the same time. What a shame! I think Digi deliberately crippled the software like this so that they can sell their very expensive 8- and 24-port versions. (Otherwise you could just buy the 2-port version and use it to share any number of devices to any number of users). I recommend that you check out the Silex Technology DS-600 or DS-700 that in my opinion offer much better value. Silex is not trying to sell huge multi-port devices. Instead they have designed the software so that you simply connect a hub and access/share each USB device individually. A user (computer) can connect to each USB device individually, leaving the other USB devices usable/accessible to other users (computers). Read more

Please read prior to purchasing.

I really had high hopes for this device when I purchased it and left with disappointment. The only thing I managed to have my USB external storage show up is in my PC file explorer. The external storage does not show up in your network and the device help support is referring you to look elsewhere as it is beyond their scope and can only help you with your USB external storage show up in your file explorer which I was able to set that up myself. If you are looking to have access to your USB external storage with a network connection and view your files on your PC, then this device is for you, but it does not worth the cost. As it is simply a USB hub that connects with a network cable instead of USB cable. Keep in mind this device does not come with a power adapter which you would need to purchase it separately and it is costly as well. If you are looking to view your USB external storage on your network, you need to be an expert in networking as I had an IT to try to set it up without any success, yet alone to have a remote access to your files. There is also a 163 page user guide available for download which may or may not help you. Lastly if you would like to return this device for any reason, you will be charged a postage fee for return as well as a minimum 30% restocking fee based on the condition of the item they receive. No power source, way over protected, bad support.

The item came without a power source, how am I supposed to find the proper power source with the correct plug to plug into this unit that has the right amount of watts, amps, and volts two correctly power this electronic item. I have never ordered anything electronic that did not come with a power supply Does not make any sense to me whatsoever. I cannot find anywhere in the description of this item that says it does not include a power supply. If that’s not enough it’s taken almost a month to try to get this product to work. Tech has no idea what they are doing, all users are not the same. I could care less about your security or your worry about the extra use of this product. I’m sick of it all, now I will have to return it after all this work and being without this needed device for almost a month. Plus now I have a power cord which I had to figure out and order separately that is worthless to me. Read more

Good product, know what you're buying.

This is a good product so long as you realize it doesn't come with a power cord for some reason, which needs to be bought separately. This is for remote USB device access. Imagine needing to connect to a usb-devices located far away from a computer. You could chain a bunch of active usb extension cables, notoriously finicky as they are, or you could use one of these and use a network connection, which are longer range. This also allows you to quickly switch which computer is connected to the usb device. Device does have limited Linux support, but could use some more work in this area to smooth out some rough edges (e.g. no command line utility, requires GUI). Other than that it's very fully featured, giving you lots of control over devices and this connection. Read more
