The transmitter is not an ergonomic fit in the hand, for me. I feel that the collar for the dog should have some sort of stretch ability for a tighter fit and comfort for the dog. All of my comments are cost motivated. I think that these ideas could be introduced. Read more

We have been using a SportDog Field Trainer for nearly 7 years. It has served us really well, but had reached the end of it's life. I thought this BigLeash one would be an upgrade, but has turned out to be a disappointment and will have to be returned. At the time of writing this review, I haven't even turned it on yet. I haven't been able to! I picked this one because I love that it has lights and a distance indicator! I already knew a half-mile radius controller serves out needs well, add that's what we've been using in the past. I was a little disappointed to learn that it doesn't actually show distance, as the product description suggests, but it's rather just a signal strength indicator. Still, it's more than our old collar gave. The deal-breakers: 1. The system shipped with the wrong charger. It was supposed to come with a forked charger that can charge both the collar receiver and remote transmitter at the same time. I apparently got one intended for their optional add-on collars that can only charge one at a time. The manual says they need about 4 hours each to charge, but after 10 hours I'm still not even able to turn the system on, as in still waiting for the collar to indicate it's fully charged. In all fairness, I called customer support right away and they agreed to send me to correct cable at no charge, so this wouldn't have been a deal-breakers all on it's own. But during the lengthy initial charging, I discovered the other problems... 2. Proprietary charger. Ughhh! In this day and age, there is zero excuse to use anything other than the standardized USB charging cables used by just about every other rechargeable electronic. This is always infuriating, impractical, and wastes plug space. (SportDog is guilty of this, too) 3. It's literally hanging from a thread. It might seem petty to get upset over the lanyard, but I know from personal experience just how important a quality lanyard is. Those threads break easily! Our original SportDog one also came with one of these cheap string lanyards. One day outside, that thread broke and the remote was lost who-knows-where, never to be seen again. The lanyard, though, was still around the neck, with the broken thread just flapping. SportDog was good enough to send us a free replacement remote (sheet showing them the broken lanyard), though, and this one came with a much more substantial and secure lanyard. Obviously, this is a big concern for me, after already losing one. Before purchasing this, I emailed our local DogWatch distributor (though I thought I was emailing the manufacturer at the time), and was told that lost remotes were not covered under warranty, and that I wood be responsible for replacement if the provided lanyard broke. Since there are no images anywhere of the lanyard, I took a chance... And got burned! If a system is only as strong as it's weakest link, the weakest link here is a tiny, minuscule thread. So unacceptable! Do better. How about metal that can't fray??? 4. The inability to program the buttons. This is the biggest, unforgivable one to me. The ultimate deal-breaker. My needs are simple: beep, vibrate, and a quick shock when absolutely necessary. I can't have all three with this BigLeash. They force you to choose between vibrate OR beep, no way to have both. Our SportDog Field Trainer let us reprogram the buttons to have the combination you want. I will never, ever, ever use the long "continuous" shock function. No inanimate object gets that level of control over my dog, nor would I ever inflict any degree of pain I couldn't stop. Yet with this one, you are stuck with that long continuous shock function with no way to swap the beep function in it's place. My dog was accidentally trained to come at the beep. While inadvertent, this has been the best mistake ever! She can be paged home from anywhere on the farm, whether or not she can hear us. No screaming ever necessary. In seven years, we have only had to use the shock function a handful of times. I consider it a last resort in times of danger. A tiny pain to get her attention and prevent potentially deadly pain, like when she's chased deer into the road or to train her not to kill livestock. What we do use more often is the vibration. It's the warning signal that she's behaving badly. I absolutely need both beep and vibrate, and it's a terrible design flaw to not allow us this option. If there are 4 possible degrees of training signal (audible, vibrate, short shock, continuous shock), there is no ability to choose the 3 most humane options. You can only have 1 painless choice, and are forced to accept the 2 most extreme of the options. What sort of people design these things if they can't see the fatal flaw with this??? Read more
