I have a very large 81+ pound rough collie show dog. We brush quite a bit, but not nightly and occasionally he gets tangles or loose mats. This type of slicker brush is the best I’ve found to brush out mats without pain for him. The tines are long enough to penetrate the mats, and the paddle is flexible, so it de-mats from the outside to the inside of the mat without breaking many hairs. It doesn’t hurt his coat and he doesn’t mind the work I do. I can use it to brush the rest of his body but that’s not where it shines. It is a dematting tool first and foremost. This brush has polished tines that don’t scratch if they accidentally touch his skin. That said, I don’t use this type of brush on my cats or my smooth collie because it’s meant for long coats only. It would not feel good scratching the skin purposefully. There are no balls on the ends of the tines which makes it unsuitable for short cat coats, but it is one of the things that makes it so useful for getting out knots in a long double coat. The tines can work into the spaces and pull the hairs from the tangles. I’ve gotten out some very stubborn mats. The tines are very securely fixed to the backing rubber. The two pieces of rubber are held securely at the top. The backing rubber does have the odor of natural rubber, but not bad. The brush is about 2.5” wide. The size makes this one great for use on the feathers behind his ears and the inner portions of his pantaloons. It frees the loose hair so it does tend to remove shedding quite a bit. Getting the fur out of the brush is very easy though; it just slides off when grasped and pulled. It’s agile and well balanced in hand. Speaking of how it feels in hand, it’s amazing. I had greatly reduced hand fatigue over my previous brush because it has a soft and squishy gel filled handle! The handle is heavier than the head which helps with hand fatigue as well. It’s a thick, comfortable grip for a woman’s size medium hand. I’ve had dozens of slicker brushes, including from very expensive “show brands” but this one is impressive for its functionality, its comfort and its value. I initially purchased this to use on my long haired cat, who tends to get a little more tangled this time of year. While he’s normally very tolerant to brushing (we brush him daily), he did not seem to be a fan of this brush. It worked great though lol! We happen to have a friend with a new Goldendoodle puppy, so I was able to try this brush on her too, and she loved it! Even though my cat didn’t enjoy this brush, performance wise, I think it worked very well! You can tell right away that the tines on this brush are longer than most other slicker brushes, so it does a really great job of getting to the base of mats and tangles, and pulling out loose hair trapped within the coat. The bend in the tines are great for working through thick, curly hair, and the density of the bristles allows it to pull up a decent amount with just a few passes. Keep in mind that the tines do NOT have pins at the end, so the tips are definitely on the sharper side. This likely won’t be an issue for pets with thick, curly coats (as long as you don’t press down on the bristles whiles brushing), but I definitely wouldn’t use this brush on a medium or short haired pet! The head of the brush is about half the size of a regular slicker brush, so keep in mind that you’ll likely have to remove the collected fur a little more frequently than you would compared to a larger slicker brush. The size makes it great for brush around the face and neck though! The brush also flexes in both directions, making it easy to maneuver and move the brush with the curves around their neck and back. Removing the hair is the same on this brush as it is on any other slicker brush—just place your thumb, index, and middle finger around the outermost tines and pinch inwards, squeezing the tines as you pinch. Do this a couple of times until you’re able to remove all the collected fur! Be sure to pinch around the base of the tines (rather than the tips of the tines) to avoid stabbing yourself! Overall, this is a great brush if your pet has a thick, dense, or curly coat. The tines are long and sharp, allowing you to brush through tangles and mats efficiently. We love this brush! The flexible paddle is what seems to make this so comfortable to my girl. The fact it is two sided, so once you fill up one side, you can just flip it over and brush away! My girl is half standard poodle and half Australian Shepherd so her hair is not so curly but long and wavy and thick like wool. This brush glides right through her hair. Once the brush is full of hair it’s very easy to just lift the hair out of the brush along the edges to clean all the hair out. This also has a nice spongy handle so you can grip the handle all you want and it still feels good in your hand. I wish the paddle was perhaps a little bigger but I also will mention that my 7 pound cat also really likes me to brush her with this brush. So perhaps a larger size is not necessary! I have been impressed with the durability of the flexible paddle, sometimes we can yank at some tangles and the paddle simply bends with us. The brush itself is fairly a good size and also small enough to use on legs and feet. The entire brush feels ergonomic and is lightweight, like holding on to a sponge. I really like this brush and the way the paddle has two sides. This might be a little pricier than other brushes but there are added benefits like the flexible paddle and the padded handle that make it well worth the cost.
