It's relatively quiet, it's lightweight for its size & power, and it more or less does a good job. I got it specifically to reduce edges from 20 to 15 degrees, and although it took a little time, it worked. If you also have a rough stone, you might want to do some preliminary reduction using the stone, but that's not absolutely necessary. Given the configuration of the sharpening slots, it will not sharpen the last inch or so next to the bolster. I've only used it for chef's knives and a longish utility knife, not sure how well it would do for paring knives. Read more
