This is one fantastic radio. I have many radios, mostly for AM Dxing, and all have there positives and negatives, and this radio is no different in those respects. I purchased this radio based off reviews that stated this was the portable radio to get for FM Dxing. Well, the good news is, this machine is absolutely incredible for FM reception. For all of you out there, looking for a portable FM DXing machine, look no further. This beats both my CC radio 3 and CC radio EP pro. The 48" dipole antenna definitely helps pull in those distant stations. For AM, it's just OK (to be fair, I have not spent much time on the AM with this radio, as the FM is just that good). It still does a good job on medium wave, but there are other units specifically made for AM reception, that will do much better. On shortwave, this radio does a fantastic job. It's definitely above average for a portable shortwave radio. Sound is fine, but lacking in low end bass. You will be treated to mid bass, but for anything lower, forget it. Highs are crystal clear, and has no problems with voice tones. The radio comes with a very unique speaker design. I would have much preferred the old fashion 5" driver, but Eton decided to go this route, possibly for weight savings. My only gripe is I wish it had a more powerful amplifier. I have found myself at full volume, and and wanting more audio output. This is one area I think Eton could be improved upon. The aesthetics of the radio are very nice. The layout is clean, the knobs and switches are positioned well. My only gripe is the power button needs to be pressed twice. This may be a feature, in case you accidentally hit it when fiddling around (which I have done a few times). It has many features I have not tried out yet. I do like the fact it has connections on the back for external antennas. My radio did come with a bit of minor damage during shipping. The speaker grill has a small indent from rough handling. Very hard to see, so I'm keeping it. Read more

Had difficulty setting the time and almost returned it until I researched the issue online. I learned there is a known problem with some RDS transmissions from local stations, and the workaround is to set the time manually(re-reading the manual helped too). Online articles explaining this are available. Great audio and a really well-designed and capable radio. I'm very happy with it's many features and capabilities. Read more

I was looking for something to replace a small Panasonic shortwave/AM/FM radio from 1991. It was fine, but unstable to sit around permanently. I wanted something that was larger, included an AC adapter, and had a bigger antenna. I knew I was giving up some digital convenience. I also did not want to pay a lot of money. I searched for hours, and settled up this Eton Elite Field Radio. It's kinda just a basic radio. It's larger, well-built and robust. It pulls in a decent number of AM & FM stations and the sound is pretty good. I'm not picking up that many shortwave stations, though, either did my other one. I bought an external antenna, which does little. This was $45 cheaper than a similar radio that was only AM/FM, so I'm happy with the choice, because I wanted a setting-around radio. This fits the bill. Read more

UPDATE 2 after additional troubles, I've given up & returned this sad descendant of the Grundig S350DX for a refund. For 10+ years I enjoyed my trusty old Grundig and decided to upgrade to a newer unit with similar features (MISTAKE). This newer Eton branded unit appeared to be a successor of the older design & did seem to have better audio (PRO), but the PROs end there. Immediately it had problems the old unit didn't, firstly some poor engineering which drained batteries faster than my old Grundig ever did (CON). Out of the box, the clock malfunctioned- I would reset the time & turning it back on a day later, the clock was wrong (CON). After resetting the clock several times over a few days, I gave up correcting it & left the display with a permanently wrong time. All around Reception was better on the old radio (CON). After about 2.5 months, the units' occasional freeze (CON) became a regular crash - almost daily, requiring a system reset via a deeply recessed button which is a pain to reach (CON). This was becoming too much work so the Eton radio was returned. Incredibly my refund had deducted "Damage fees" totaling $24.32 (BOO!). ETON: poor shadow of the once great German company "Grundig" brand. So disappointing. Waste of time and $$$. Read more
