This works great in my office. Read more
Overall, this is a very effective air purifier. It uses a $150 filter listed to last up to a year. However, that's entirely dependent on air quality where the unit is being used. It has electronic features that automatically monitor air quality and tells when the filter needs to be replaced. Manufacturer states that the room size the unit will cover is up to 915sqft. This is really not the best way to estimate a system like this because you could have 8ft ceilings or 10 ft ceilings which could drastically change the area size this unit will be effective for. But it states that it can manage 915 sqft with 3 air changes per hour or 549sqft at 5 air changes an hour. It would be nice if it listed cfms instead of sqft because that would be a better indicator of what size space the unit would be effective for. Allergy protection with H13 True HEPA filtration boasts to capture up to 99.95% of particles as small as 0.1 microns, including allergens, such as pollen, dust, and pet dander. It will help with smells, but don't expect it to eliminate some such as voc. Overall, this unit is effective and quiet, but needs a better estimator on coverage area, and filter replacement could be expensive if you are using the unit frequently or in a low air quality area. The product dimensions of 12.5"x12.5"x29" are missing from the listing at the time of this review and an update to the advertisement has been requested. This large air purifier from Fellowes has kept my kitchen, living room, dining room, den and office smelling good and having good quality air. This big unit is easy to operate and only has a few buttons. I don't use timers or manual mode when it comes to air purifiers so I'll review Automatic mode only. In Auto mode (the A option vs. the M), the unit senses the air and adjusts the fan speed automatically to what it deems necessary. There is a large digital readout on one the front side that is surrounded by a color-coded LED ring. The readout is a numerical representation of air quality and ranges from 0-500 (0 being the best and 500 being the worst). The LED ring changes colors from green to yellow to red to indicate overall air quality at a glance (with green being good and red being bad). Once set, the unit does everything else. When cooking, if I fry something, the numeric readout may rise to 200 or more. The air purifier runs at a much higher speed (which is generates significantly more fan noise) to clean the air more quickly. As the readout approaches 100-120, the fan speed reduces to medium and once the readout is in the single digits, the fan reverts to the lowest speed. I did notice the fan cycling between medium and high fan speeds with the readout in the 100-200 range. It would run at on fan speed for a minute or two and then switch to the other. It does this repeatedly when clearing a room because the air-quality senor is built-in and the air around the unit may be cleaner than the rest of the area. My other air purifiers aren't as large so I don't notice the fans changing speeds as much. Overall, I'm really satisfied. A single air purifier is covering about 1000 square feet (including an active kitchen). It clear the air quickly and effectively and has easy-to read displays. The setup only takes a couple of moments. It takes standard replacement HEPA filters which is a big plus. This is clearly the best and most expensive air purifier I've reviewed so far. Also, it works better than my Dyson air purifiers and is less expensive to buy replacement filters. Fellowes is known for making heavy-duty paper shredders. Their stuff is built to last. This is a well made air filter from a highly-respected company with a long track record of making quality products. This is worth considering when comparing this air purifier to those made by unknown companies with proprietary replacement filters, few (if any) other products and no history. Note: As a Vine reviewer of over 15 years, I've reviewed a lot of air purifiers. My wife has asthma and finds that having clean air helps prevents triggering her attacks. I rarely endorse a product this much. Read more
We sent for this large air filter when we discovered black mold in our three-year-old house. A smaller filter is working away in the affected closet and this large unit is taking care of most of the rest of the open-concept house. Because we often have heavy smoke in late summer and fall due to forest fires, my husband and I had discussed getting a HEPA filter. The mold spurred the decision. The recent fires in Canada surprised us with smoke in mid-May. Outdoors, the air burned the throat and irritated eyes and nose. The indoors was a refuge where eye drops relieved eye symptoms, raw throats were given respite and angry sinuses calmed. As long as we didn't leave for long stretches of time, the filtered air in our four walls made life more livable. Until the restoration experts clean up our mold, we are feeling a bit safer knowing how much better this smoke experience with our filter has been. If the effect of the smoke was lessened this much, we hope the dangerous mold spores are being captured for us as well. Because the unit has filtered so much bad air, I am searching for a replacement filter. The replacements seem to be recommended lower on the site. Before I order I will be certain to compare model numbers carefully—and recommend you do as well. Simple filters can be set up on a six-month recurring order for convenience's sake. The HEPA filter is recommended to be replaced annually. (Please double-check this information for your specific unit!) One big advantage to using this filter is my household dusting habit—I have none. With two dogs, three cats, and two aging humans, the dust and dander gather in copious amounts. I rarely dust. It's an admitted character flaw. I hate dust but I also hate to remove it. We have not been using the unit long and, of course, I failed to dust before starting the unit. I dusted a couple of weeks ago after the smoke dissipated. The recent layer seems to be much lighter when I dusted again today. (Only because I expected company!) Less dust! What a lovely side effect! Our experience has been extremely positive with this Fellowes 9794601 AeraMax. I highly recommend this unit for a relatively small home—possibly with backups. It has given us great service in the short time we have been using it. We are certain we would have had serious health issues without it. Anyone searching for a solution to a HEPA air filter need, please consider this model. It is serving us well. Read more
